Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update      September 5, 2003

YOUR LETTERS COULD HELP LAND 500 JOBS: The 5,000 letters of support from people in southern Ohio helped Pike County land the demonstration facility for the gas centrifuge technology to enrich uranium. That facility is expected to open in two years. But the work isn’t done. Now, letters of support are being sought for the full-scale plant itself which would employ 500 people and be operational by 2010. The United States Enrichment Corporation will choose between Piketon and Paducah, KY by the end of this year. Letters of support for the Piketon site have been printed in area newspapers with instructions to fax back to your local chamber. If you missed it, you can go to this link on our website USEC Letter of Support, print the letter from there and fax it to us at 702-2727. You might also think about making copies for your employees. Every letter will help. It did the last time and it can again. In addition, if you’re a member of a fraternal group or organization, you might see about getting the endorsement of your group. These also will help show USEC that we’re all behind getting good jobs for the region.

AND IF YOU’RE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE MAIL: While complaints about mail service, with post office boxes in particular, and other deliveries was spotlighted in a recent article in the Chillicothe Gazette, you can make sure you get your thoughts heard and seen by logging on to the form on the USPS website. Here’s the link: Online postal complaint form.

SEAFOOD IN SIGHT: Work continues to progress by Sean Immell on the former Blue Gables Inn just north of Shawnee Lanes on North Bridge Street. Renovations are turning the building into Sean’s third restaurant, this one with a seafood theme. No word on the expected opening date.

GOLF OUTING NEEDS VOLUNTEERS AND GOLFERS: Actually, we only have room for about five more teams for the outing on Thursday, Sept. 25 so now is the time to register. You can do that by clicking here: Golf Outing registration. We also could use a few volunteers to help with registration, grilling hot dogs and maneuvering the beverage carts around the course. If you’re interested, give Rosie a call here at the chamber at 702-2722.

GRAND OPENING FOR NEW MEMBER: The Gift Post, a new member of the chamber, is holding its grand opening at 601 E. Main St. today and Saturday until 7 p.m. From 1-3 Saturday, artist Ted Fickisen will be unveiling his new release of the courthouse complete with Bicentennial bunting. Marlene Holman is managing the shop for owners Maxie Good and Marvin Riley.

EASTSIDE BRIDGE OPEN BOTH WAYS: The Charleston Pike Bridge off East Main Street opened to two-way traffic Thursday, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. That keeps people from long detours around Narrows Road. And the result is a better bridge.

BIG BEAR TO STAY?: The Big bear supermarket chain will not be sold and has a new chairman, according to the Columbus Dispatch. James Demme was named the new chairman Thursday and said his plans call for launching an aggressive marketing campaign to “appeal to customers and bring them back.”
