Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce
Weekly Update August 22, 2003
BIG WEEKEND IS HERE: The weather forecast calls for perfect skies and temperatures Saturday evening for the Boston Pops concert at VA Memorial Stadium. That adds to the perfect execution of a plan by Tom and Mary Hamsher to bring this renowned orchestra to play before 7,000 people in one of the most progressive small towns in the Midwest. To ensure you hear all the music and get to your seat on time, make sure your schedule builds in extra time to account for the huge crowd. On with the show!
BAB PRELUDE TO BIG WEEKEND: The best estimate we heard for the crowd at Wednesday’s Business After Business on Paint Street was 500, a phenomenal number for a hot August weeknight. The Downtown Associates were perfect hosts, lining up great food from the downtown restaurants and providing great entertainment with two bands and the troupe from the dance studio. The event kicked off with the dedication of another historical marker, this one noting the Banking Crisis of 1819 and was followed by the auctioning of items for the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau. The winners: Charlie Stevens ($425) for the OSU autographed football, Bob Hamm ($1,075) for the autographed OSU helmet, Price Insurance ($500) for the community table at the Pops concert and Diane Carnes ($850) for the guest conductorship at the Pops concert and the Keith Lockhart-autographed baton.
LAST CALL: Monday is the last day to register participants for the next session of the Pathfinders leadership series. We have 11 now who are taking advantage of the best training/leadership program in the area, but there’s room for more. Check out the details here: Pathfinders information and application
FEDS COME TO THEIR SENSES: Thanks to an overwhelming outcry from chambers and other associations from around the nation, the Federal Communications Commission postponed until at least January 2005 enforcement of the new rule governing faxes. Many of you completed and returned the form we sent asking permission to communicate via fax or e-mail, and we appreciate your response. We will keep them on file. The rule, which would have required prior written consent to send faxes, was set to go into effect Monday.
LOSE YOUR TEMPER BEHIND THE WHEEL?: Then you might want to spend your lunch hour Tuesday at the Ross County Service Center. The Ohio Valley Safety Council is presenting a program on road rage that will include a short video, then comments by a local state trooper. The $8 charge taken at the door also gets you a meal. The program starts at 11:30 a.m. To register: Road rage program registration
HELP THE COLLEGE: Included in the last issue of the chamber’s Dateline magazine was a flyer asking for your opinions on several issues. Your replies will help Southeastern Business College develop a better curriculum which will mean better students which will mean better employees for your companies. Lost the form? Call Elaine Haubeil at 774-6300.
TORT REFORM TOPIC OF SESSION: Representatives from several area firms are expected to meet with state Rep. John Schlichter Tuesday morning at the Bob Evans Restaurant on U.S. 62 in Washington Court House to discuss tort reform legislation. The session is being sponsored by the Alliance for Civil Justice that includes the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and the Ohio Manufacturers Association. If you’d like to attend, e-mail the Ohio chamber at wfitzgibbon@ohiochamber.com. Or you may call William Fitzgibbon at 614-228-4201, Ext. 132. The session starts at 8:30 a.m. and you’re asked to show up at least 15 minutes earlier.

KUDOS FOR KENWORTH: Customers gave Kenworth products top ratings over competitors’ products in major award categories including quality, exterior, interior, engine and ride/handling/braking which led to the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates 2003 Heavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction award. This was for the Class 8 trucks built in Chillicothe and was in the Pickup and Delivery segment. “Bob Christensen, Kenworth general manager and a vice president of the parent PACCAR company, said, “This is a tremendous honor for Kenworth, our dealers and our T800, T600 and W900 models that are used in this market.”
