PLANS ON THE BOOKS FOR BRIDGE, HIGH AND FRANKFORT: Several major developments are in the works for Chillicothe and Ross County, several of which could start by the end of summer:
ON THE ROAD TO FINDING JOBS: Learning new methods to try and lure its suppliers was the purpose behind a trip taken this week by a local contingent to the Honda of America plant in Marysville. The group met with three executives, learning of the process suppliers use in choosing sites, and took a tour of the auto manufacturing plant that drives the economy in that part of the state. The contingent: Mayor Joe Sulzer, Commissioner Jim Caldwell, Dona Smith of the CIC, Anthony Austin of the city Economic Development office, and Marvin Jones of the chamber. Leading the tour was Chillicothe native Caroline Leach Ramsey, Honda's coordinator of Government and Industry Relations. ENDEAVOR CENTER LUNCHEON TOPIC: The new business and light manufacturing incubator at the OSU South Centers in Piketon will be featured when Steve Shepherd, the Endeavor Center's director, speaks at the Networking Luncheon Wednesday at the Chillicothe Country Club. The center is designed to help fledgling businesses get off the ground by providing space at reasonable rates and the use of office equipment and other business necessities. In addition to the presentation, each company will get 30 seconds to talk about their latest developments. We're also encouraging chamber members to contribute items that can be used as door prizes. The cost is $15 and it gets underway at 11:30. Please register to attend or let us know if you have a door prize by sending an email to rdaughters@chillicotheohio.com. AGENCY: TRENDS POINT TO PROBLEMS: According to the Ohio Public Expenditure Council, Ohio is not a big downward spiral, but there are three major concerns after looking at statistics and trends: (1) The population is aging, putting increased pressure on Medicare and Medicaid expenses while the contributions to the tax base shrink; (2) "the Council can justify deep concerns centering on primary and secondary enrollment, graduation rates and the higher education system and its funding, particularly when one considers the fact that increasingly greater resources are being devoted to these priorities. Whether or not these resource are producing the results the state needs to build a bright future is up to the reader." (3) "higher education is being slowly ... moved to the back burner at a time when much of the job market is demanding a bachelor's degree for an entry-level job." TAX SEMINARS COMING UP: Workshops for small businesses dealing with taxes, such as filing requirements, recordkeeping and estimated tax requirements, are being conducted around the state through December. The Ohio Department of Taxation, the Internal Revenue Service and the Ohio Small Business Development Centers are sponsoring the sessions. The closest ones to here are set for Sept.. 14 in Jackson and Dec. 1 in Piketon. For information on either one, contact welch.183@osu.edu or call 740-289-2071.
VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor:
