Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update    June 13, 2003

CHAMBER MEMBERS UPBEAT, YET RESERVED: Results from the latest economic survey conducted by the chamber showed that our members definitely feel both the local and national economies are headed in the right direction, much more so than in February when the first survey was conducted. On the other hand, a lower percentage felt their particular business would only do OK the next six months versus February when more businesses were more optimistic. Overall, though, the results were very encouraging and point to a good summer season ahead. For more on the survey, visit www.chillicotheohio.com.

AND SPEAKING OF ACTIVITY: More indications that the local economy is humming and that opportunities abound:

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS: Crews are hard at work on Marietta Road for the new addition to the Herrnstein dealership for the Mitsubishi line. The company has been selling the vehicles for a few months now and the addition will give it a showplace for all the new models.

BAB IS NEXT WEDNESDAY: A three-piece jazz ensemble and a chance at a $125 gift certificate to Sunnybrook or DeGarmo’s await guests at the next Business After Business Wednesday at Sunrush Construction. The event at Seventh and McArthur streets is 5-7 p.m. and will give guests a look at the firm’s relatively new quarters. To register: BAB registration. Also don’t forget that the chamber maintains photos of previous BABs on its website at the same location with the links to the right.

STILL NEED HELP FOR THE SUMMER?: If you’re looking for some part- or full-time help just for the summer, don’t forget about the chamber’s Job Bank site. It’s a great place to list openings and get calls quick to fill the positions. Call Lynette Reed here at the chamber at 702-2722. And check it out at: Job Bank.

WAL-MART ADDING JOBS NEXT YEAR: The conversion to a super center will mean 150-200 more jobs at Wal-Mart next year. In addition to a grocery, the center will have a flower shop and a tire and lube center.

IMPRESS YOUR CLASSMATES: The committee for the All-County All-Class Reunion is looking for sponsors for the tents for the various schools and decades that will be in Yoctangee Park the July 4 weekend. Sponsorship is $400 and will include signage and two complimentary full registrations to all events and activities. Also, the group is looking for businesses that might want to offer special discounts to reunion-goers. Information can go into the registration packages. For more details on either program, contact Scott Graham at scott@chillicothe2003.com or call him at 779-2003.

JACKSON LOOKING FOR GOLFERS: The Jackson chamber is holding its golf outing here in Ross County at the Jaycees course on Thursday, June 26. Anyone locally interested in playing, at $60 per person, should get in touch with Randy Heath at 740-286-2722. This chamber’s outing is set for Thursday, Sept. 25 at Running Fox and will feature a chance at a new car for a hole-in-one and a new fantasy golf opportunity. Details on signing up will be out starting next week.

TOURISM IMPACT HIGHLIGHTED: Lissa Cleary of the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau gave the participants at Wednesday’s Networking Luncheon a good update on the impact and importance of tourism to our local economy. Sixteen companies were represented at the luncheon at the Dock at Water and each got a chance to talk about their recent activities following a scavenger hunt ice-breaker led by Ken Shelton of Manpower. At right, Jeanie Balzer of First Capital Craft Mall talks about the 250,000 people who come to her business each year.

WELCOME NEWEST MEMBER: Dave Maguire and Eric Bayless of All American Electric of Ohio joined the chamber this week. Their office is at 63 W. Second St.

THE WRONG IMPRESSION?: Local readers of USA Today Wednesday might have been a little shocked to read the item in the “Across the States” feature. The item for Ohio dealt with the arrests of the two juveniles in the arson of the Carlisle Building. The item mentioned the building was destroyed and that it was “key to redevelopment plans” and  it “has long been the main location for businesses in the city.” A letter to the editor from the chamber was submitted trying to set the record straight. And kudos to the Howards for what seem to be genuine efforts to restore the structure and to the contractor for making windows in the wall making it much less obtrusive.

OPEN-AIR MARKET: Don’t forget the weekly Farmers Market is now in the parking lot of the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue on Saturdays from 8 to noon. Merchants report good sales in the first few weeks despite some problems with the weather.
