Weekly Update for January 17, 2003

EXCITEMENT BUILDS: More than 400 had registered by Friday morning to attend the chamber’s annual dinner meeting featuring Ben Hartsock. The appearance by the Unioto grad who is a member of Ohio State’s national champion football Buckeyes prompted what may be a record crowd for the dinner. The move to Shoemaker Center at Ohio University-Chillicothe now allows all who want to attend to make it. The evening starts with a social hour at 6 and dinner around 7. In addition to hearing from Hartsock, chamber members and their guests will also learn who wins the awards for top volunteer, major renovations and Entrepreneur of the Year. SCHOOLS PROGRAM SESSION SET: City Schools Supt. Dennis Leone, Treasurer Stacy Overly and a board member or two will be on hand to bring chamber members up to date on the latest developments in the building project of the district. They also hope to have a representative from the architectural firm on hand. It’s a good opportunity for members to get updated and to ask questions about the process to those most involved. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. The cost is $5.
CONGRATS TO THE NEWEST CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: Dave Smith, the former radio station owner who continues to maintain his ties with the chamber, was named as the Jaycees’ Citizen of the Year in ceremonies Wednesday. Dave’s community-minded work over the years was recognized by the Jaycees and is appreciated by many in this area.
SECOND TOURIST INFORMATION LOCATION TO OPEN: The Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau will open a second information center on Feb. 18 at 150 E. Second St. The site, between the WIN office and the new home of Children’s Services, was chosen because of its proximity to a space where motorcoaches bringing in guests for the Bicentennial year can load and unload at the northeast corner of Second and Mulberry streets, according to Lissa Cleary, the bureau’s executive director. The bureau is looking for volunteers to help staff the center which will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. Those wishing to help should contact Jane Bost at 702-7677.
DISNEY SEMINAR SET FOR MARCH: A reminder that the Disney Keys to Excellence seminar will be held Thursday, March 6 in Columbus. The half-day session will cover “Service, Disney Style” and “Management, Disney Style.” The cost is $175 per chamber member and $225 for non-members. For more information, call the chamber office to have a flyer faxed to your business. The deadline to register is Feb. 21. More information on our website will be available shortly.
ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH SOUGHT: The Appalachian Regional Commission is taking applications through next Friday (Jan. 24) for its Youth Entrepreneurship Education Springboard Awards competition. Six business-training programs will be selected to receive awards of $2,000 each and a teacher and student from each program will be honored March 17 in Washington, D.C. Complete application materials are available at www.arc.gov/entrepreneurship or by e-mailing vcobb@arc.gov.
INFOSIGHT A GREAT HOST: More than 100 enjoyed the hospitality of John Robertson, Dave Hudelson and their staff at the Business After Business this week at the Infosight Corp. Everyone got a close-up look at the operations of the company and many went home with a souvenir ID tag. Pictures from the event, and past BABs, can be found at January BAB photos. February’s BAB will be at TPR Personnel at Main and Ewing streets, just off Bridge Street.
