Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update   December 13, 2002

ANNUAL DINNER MEETING TO FEATURE LOCAL OSU FOOTBALL STANDOUT: Less than three weeks after he plays in the game that will decide the national collegiate football championship, Ben Hartsock will be the featured speaker for your chamber’s annual dinner meeting. The Unioto graduate will also take your questions concerning the game and the Buckeye team at the dinner which will be held this year at St. Mary’s Family Life Center on East Fourth Street. This also will be an excellent time to be a contributor to the event through a table sponsorship. The cost is $125. Call Cami at 702-2722 for details.

90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION A SUCCESS: About 140 members and their guests were treated to some nostalgia and refreshments at the special party Thursday night at the Christopher Conference Center. On hand were 10 former and the present chairmen of the Board of Directors: John Herlihy (1966), James Caldwell (73), Burrel Adkins (77), Charles “Buzz” Knoles (79), Warren Henricks (80-81), David Uhrig (89-90), Mike Hall (91-92), Tom White (96), Marvin Jones (00-01) and Connie Smart (02). The full listing of former chairmen will be on our website in the near future.

MORE NEW MEMBERS: Three businesses recently became new members, pushing membership back above the 500 level:

AND ONE HAS A GRAND OPENING: Los Mariachis is inviting all chamber members and the public to its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday at 11 a.m. This will be a good opportunity to meet Luis Cruz and the rest of the staff of the restaurant and also to enjoy lunch. The business is next to Central Hardware.

DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE PROGRAM: Bob Rude, a consultant for the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation, explained the state’s Drug-Free EZ Workplace Program to those who attended Thursday’s Ross County Safety Council luncheon at the Service Center, shown at left. If you missed the meeting and would like more information, contact Carrie here at the chamber at 702-2722.

NOW TAKING NOMINATIONS: The chamber would like to recognize a local member at its annual dinner in January for its attention and care to the exterior of its facilities. The Sparkle Award also takes into account other improvements made by a business which benefits the community as a whole. To nominate someone or your business, send us an e-mail with the name of the business, address, a contact name, telephone number and a short description of why this business is being nominated.

NATIONAL PARK WINS AWARD: Hopewell Culture National Historic Park received the Tourism Pride Award for the past quarter from the Ross-Chillicothe Convention & Visitors Bureau for its “professionalism in promoting one of our area’s most valuable resources – history.” The park consists of five separate earthwork complexes and has about 20,000 visitors per year.

ADELPHIA PROMPTS LOCAL SHOPPING: For the second year in a row, Adelphia Media Services produced a commercial encouraging our residents to support local businesses when doing their holiday shopping. The advertisement that airs on most of Adelphia’s cable channels, carries the tag “brought to you by Adelphia Media Services and your local Chamber of Commerce.” A very nice reminder that you needn’t stray far to take care of those wish lists.

PHONE PROJECT TO HELP EASTER SEALS: The Sprint Project Connect program locally resulted in more than 600 mobile phones being donated. Some phones will be refurbished and re-sold and proceeds from the sales will benefit Easter Seals. A ceremony was held at the local Horizon warehouse on Orange Street in which the donated phones were placed inside an antique phone booth. On hand were Sheriff Ron Nichols and representatives from Meadwestvaco, Easter Seals and Columbia Gas. Your chamber office served as a drop-off location.

GET MORE OUT OF YOUR DUES: If your business usually becomes involved in many chamber activities, such as the Expo and annual dinner, you might want to consider one of our premium membership packages. This year we are offering Gold and Silver packages at $1,000 and $500 respectively above your usual dues payment. These memberships gain your business extra exposure at many of the events as well as services that can aid in bringing more customers through the door. Give Cami a call at 702-2722 for more information.
