Your ALT-Text here LET THE DEVELOPMENT BEGIN: The dedication Thursday in Richmond Dale of the final phase of the widening of U.S. 35 from the Ohio River to Dayton signaled the start of efforts to begin bringing jobs to the corridor. Not that jobs weren't being sought before, but now, with four freeway-style lanes in both directions, the transportation part of the economic development puzzle has now been solved. Truck-intensive industries no longer need shy from the region, especially with four-lane connections going in all four compass directions. On hand for the dedication in addition to Gov. Bob Taft and other dignitaries was famed restaurateur Bob Evans, shown at left with MarJean Kennedy, the governor's district representative for the Ohio Department of Development. Next big project for the county: The Ohio 207 connector from Ohio 104 near the VA Medical Center to U.S. 23 near Delano Road, due about this same time in 2006.

BAB TO SEE LOTS OF WINNERS: Delbert Bochard of Huntington Bank and Charlie Stevens of RLS Recycling will shower at least 10 guests with gifts at the next Business After Business at the bank downtown on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The two have lined up door prizes worth more than $500, including a night’s stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites, a night’s stay at the Christopher Inn and gift certificates to Damon’s, Italian Garden, Dakota’s Roadhouse, Charley’s Flowers, Elliott-Mathis Flowers, an arrangement from Christmas Castle, items from North South Produce and a savings bond. It’s not too early to register to attend: BAB registration

SAFETY COUNCIL IN FESTIVE MOOD: A panel of experts will give some tips on how to stay safe during the holiday season at the next luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council on Thursday. A representative from AEP, the Chillicothe Fire Department and the Pike County Health Department will be on hand to offer advice. The luncheon starts at 11:30 at the Chillicothe Country Club. Make sure to register in advance: Safety Council luncheon registration

THE FLOAT IS GONE: Some merchants are reporting a slight increase in the number of bad checks, thanks in large part to the new check-processing laws in which funds are gone quicker from accounts, essentially doing away with "the float" of a few days as in the past.

NEW SEWER DISTRICT FORMING: Jefferson Township's trustees have been working on forming a new sewer district in the southeast corner of the county. A meeting to further the process along is set for 3:15 Monday in the county commissioners' office.

CHECK OUT THE NEW MEMBERS: Today's newsletter has ads on the left from three of our newest members as part of their package for signing up during the membership drive that ended Nov. 15. All have links either to websites or e-mail addresses, so make sure to visit and welcome them to the chamber. The ads will continue the next few weeks. And make sure to check out the services of our regular advertisers who appear at the left also.

HR COUNCIL SETS HOLIDAY LUNCHEON: 17 East on Main Street (just a few doors west of the chamber's new office) will be the site for the luncheon of the South Central Ohio Human Resource Council on Wednesday at noon. And the council is subsidizing the affair by charging only $5, but you must make a reservation: 774-5181 or cbarlage@paccar.com.

RETURN YOUR FORMS: Those chamber members who are taking advantage of our workers' compensation group rating program through Compensation Consultants are encouraged to return enrollment materials that recently were mailed. Do it now so you won't face a battle come the Feb. 21 deadline. If you're not in the program, but would like to get a quote on what could amount to a substantial discount, contact CCI at 800-837-3200.

MAKE SURE IT'S AUTHORIZED: The Performance Publishing Group's Dawn Plavak is calling on chamber members to advertise in the highly successful map that is made available to visitors and many others seeking to find their way around Chillicothe and Ross County. PPG is the only chamber-authorized vendor for a map. So, if you get a call from someone wanting your business, make sure it's Dawn. A portion of the map proceeds go toward financing chamber programs and keeping dues lower.

Your ALT-Text here ANOTHER BASEBALL BOOK COMING: Come this spring, local diamond fans might find a real gem in "Baseball in Chillicothe", a photo book by Mike Shannon that has 200 photos. The first chapter is devoted to everything prior to the Chillicothe Paints, and then it details the Paints themselves. It's expected out in April and will go for $19.95. Shannon also was the author for "Everything Happens in Chillicothe", a history of the Frontier League.
