Happy Thanksgiving
(and best wishes to all for a successful holiday shopping season)
As the Christmas holiday preparations move into high gear this weekend, Thanksgiving is the best time to reflect on all the community's good fortune this past year in terms of commerce and progress. In case you haven't visited our homepage recently, here's a rundown on what has been a very prosperous year for Chillicothe and Ross County:
- A $15 million expansion at the Kenworth Truck Company plant positions the Paccar firm for future growth to build the Class 8 heavy-duty trucks. This is in addition to the new robot-operated paint lines that allowed production to go to 100 trucks a day from 80. Also in the works is a new training and office complex.
- The YSK Corporation is adding 40,000 square feet and a minimum 25 new jobs to handle a new differential holding harness for Honda vehicles. The investment will total $22 million in building and equipment costs.
- The Adena Health Pavilion opened in the spring to become part of the Adena Health System that now has more than 1,600 employees. Future plans include a women's and children center, a heart center, a training facility and a cancer care center.
- Traditions of Chillicothe opens in December its new residential health care facility that will mean 50-60 new jobs. The addition includes 23 more independent living units, a specialized Alzheimer's care unit and complete rehabilitation facilities.
- Sam's Club opened in September on North Bridge Street, bringing at least 150 new jobs.
- CVS opened a new store on North Bridge Street and Walgreens plans to build and open a new pharmacy on Western AVenue in 2007.
- Herrnstein Chrysler is adding to its stable of dealerships with a new Hyundai showroom on U.S. 23 at the new Ohio 207 interchange north of the city.
- USEC continues work on its American Centrifuge project in Pike County that's expected to be operational in 2010 with 500 jobs.
- FedEx Ground built a new facility in the Gateway Interchange Industrial Park off Ohio 104 that will mean about 10 new jobs.
- A speculative building will go up in the same park in 2007 to accommodate tenants of up to 35,000 square feet.
- Several churches embarked upon or wrapped up major construction projects.
To any who didn't make the list, our apologies, but it seems impossible to list all of the activity that has taken place in our region. And for all of this, we are most thankful. We hope you and your employees enjoy the long weekend with family and friends.
NEW HIGHWAY NEAR TO OPENING: In about two weeks, the new Ohio 207 connector from U.S. 23 to Ohio 104 is expected to open to traffic. The opening was shoved back because of soggy weather and some other delays, but it is going to happen before the end of the year. Watch for word on a dedication ceremony. The opening also should relieve some of the non-shopping traffic on Bridge Street.
SHAWNEE SQUARE GETTING SOME WORK, TENANT: Landmark Properties is doing some facade work in the center off Bridge Street, according to city building permits. Also look for an announcement soon on another major tenant.
PAINTS TO HAVE GUESTS FOR JULY 4: More than 450 players, their family and friends are expected in town next summer for the Continental Amateur Baseball Association's 18-under World Series. The Chillicothe Paints landed the tournament that will bring 16-20 teams from all across the country and Puerto Rico July 1-7. That will be one big weekend for the community as the next All-Class Reunion also is scheduled for the holiday next year. The Paints worked with county officials and the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau to land the tourney and is working on other events to utilize the new artificial turf at VA Memorial Stadium. Also, mark your calendars for Friday, May 25 when the Paints open their 2007 season at home against one of the league's new entries, Slippery Rock.
