Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update   November 22, 2002

BAB BROUGHT THEM OUT: The latest technology of Sprint PCS was on display for the many people who made it to Wednesday’s Business After Business at the Sprint Store on North Bridge Street. “Ringer”, shown at right, made the rounds of the crowd as did the more than 200 who attended the event. The chamber raffle raised $164 for the Pathfinders program with the Sprint goodies package going to board member Rob Robson.

MAJOR RESOURCE AVAILABLE: While we all know that libraries are resources, you might want to take another look at the Quinn Library at Ohio University-Chillicothe. Head Librarian Stan Planton is inviting business and industry to utilize the extensive Internet search engines he has available there. More than 40,000 periodicals are included in the searches. So, if you need to know the price of tea in China or find the latest trend to market to baby boomers, get in touch with Planton. He may be reached at planton@ohiou.edu or at 774-7201.

SALES SEMINAR AVAILABLE: A “Neighborhood Sales Builder” seminar is available to our members through our affiliation with the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce. Marc Slutsky of Street Fighter Marketing will be the featured speaker on Dec. 3, 7:30-9 a.m. at The Rose and Thistle Pub at 1200 Chambers Road in Columbus. The price is $10. To register, send ASAP an e-mail to uainfo@uachamber.org or call 614-481-5711. Many of the seminars sponsored by members of the Central Ohio Chambers of Commerce are available to you, our members. We’ll keep you posted as they come along.

A PROJECT WORTH CHECKING: Hats off to Deb Main of Globe Furniture for what will be a crowning touch on this year’s Downtown Open House. By working with the Ross County Historical Society and its archives, Main has been able to come up with posters for many downtown businesses showing former tenants from many years ago. The photos will be a big hit with shoppers this weekend at the Open House as well as into the Bicentennial year as the posters become a fixture in the store windows. The Open House runs until 8 this evening and until 5 Saturday and noon-4 Sunday.

SAFETY COUNCIL GETS SOME TIPS: Marsha Bevins, safety and security director at Mill’s Pride in Pike County shown at right, was the featured guest at this week’s Ross County Safety Council luncheon. More than 30 turned out to hear her talk about a disaster drill conducted recently at the plant. Next month’s luncheon is Dec. 12 at 11:30 at the Ross County Service Center and will be about the drug-free workplace program of the Bureau of Workers Compensation.

CRAFT MALL OPEN HOUSE: When you’re done shopping downtown, you might want to check the annual Christmas Open House at the First Capital Craft Mall. It will be Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on 400 Chamber Drive north of town.

STAYING IN THE SPIRIT: Just a reminder that a clearinghouse has been established for businesses or individuals looking to aid families during the holidays. The Community Christmas Connection allows you or your firm to select a family facing particular needs (homelessness, pregnancy, illness, etc.) while not duplicating efforts by others. To find a match, contact Kelly Mettler at 773-2651 Ext. 2147 or mettlm@odjfs.state.oh.us.

HELP KEEP FAMILIES WARM: The local chapter of the American Red Cross responds to every house fire in Ross County, offering free assistance to the families hit by the tragedy. Each person receives a warm blanket. To continue this assistance, the local chapter is seeking donations of $5 which will buy one blanket or you may donate a factory-sealed twin or full-size blanket. Donations go to American Red Cross, 115 W. Main St., Chillicothe 45601. Call 772-2014 for more information.

DID YOU KNOW: That of the 27,136 households in Ross County, 14,979 (or 55 percent) have a married couple with children? Or that there is an average 2.5 persons per household? For more information like this, make sure to check the economic development links on the chamber’s home page at www.chillicotheohio.com.

BICENTENNIAL BALL TABLES STILL AVAILABLE: The gala ball which will close next year’s Statehood Day festivities on March 1 is still taking orders for corporate tables which seat 10. The cost is $650. Inquiries may be made to Jan Nusbaum at 703-5082.
