Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update      October 3, 2003

CANDIDATES NIGHTS HUGE SUCCESS: Republican Diane Carnes and Democrat Joe Sulzer didn’t flinch from the questions asked of them in front of the 70 people who attended the second of two Candidates Nights sponsored by the chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee. The mayoral candidates wound up the forums following last week’s meeting with City Council candidates and this past week’s meeting which included candidates for council president and law director. The mayoral candidates were asked their views on economic development strategies, helping businesses through the maze of local regulations, the Carlisle Building and relationship with the chamber. Photos of all the candidates and the crowd are available online or by clicking on the photo. You can catch the candidates again on Oct. 14 at the local League of Women Voters forum. And don’t forget to get to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 4 to vote.

Chamber endorses schools issues Better schools will produce better students which mean better employees for businesses. That’s the rationale behind the endorsement by the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce for the tax issues on the ballot for the Chillicothe and vocational schools. “Better schools also mean a better community overall which makes it that much easier to attract new business and industry,” said Marvin Jones, executive director of the chamber. “While the increase in property taxes for both businesses and individuals will take more managing of resources, both school districts have solid plans for how they will spend the money. And those plans will make for better schools.” The Governmental Affairs Committee of the chamber studied the issues and met with officials from Chillicothe City Schools and the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center. The committee recommended to the chamber’s Board of Directors that the issues be endorsed. The board voted unanimously in favor of the endorsements.
