RETAIL FIGURES BROUGHT TO LIFE: The annual license tag survey, the responses of major retailers and employment figures from major employers were all used by Ohio University students to substantiate the claim that Chillicothe is a regional shopping, dining and entertainment hub. Tom Brown, an assistant professor of management at Ohio University-Chillicothe, supervised the students and helped analyze the results which were the topic for the Networking Luncheon this week at the Chillicothe Country Club. The results are incorporated in an updated brochure that real estate developers and others can use to help lure more retail businesses here. Copies of "If You're Not Doing Business in Chillicothe, Then You're Missing a Real Opportunity" will be available shortly. The information also is always available on the chamber website under the economic development link.

NEW OWNER IS INDUSTRY LEADER: The Standard Car Truck Co. has been in business since 1896 and bills itself as "the world leader in providing stabilization systems for freight cars." The new owner of Union Spring and Manufacturing on Wetzel Drive on Chillicothe's east side supplies equipment for all major railroads. It is based in Park Ridge, IL. All 65 employees will continue working for the new company which takes over Monday.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE YIELDS RESULTS: Applications continue to arrive from the chamber's annual Membership Drive. Joining this past week were:

  • AquaSource1, 505 E. Seventh St., by Shane Thompson, 775-1507, a water treatment business that's now part of Sunrush Construction.
  • First Capital Answering Service, 6640 Mt. Tabor Road, by Jackie Shope, 703-4405, a spinoff by a former employee of Horizon Chillicothe Telephone.
  • Innovative Packaging Solutions, 350 S. Douglas Ave., by Daniel Colopy, 775-2740, box manufacturing.
BUSINESS CALENDAR LAUNCHED: Wondering when and where that marketing seminar is being held? A new feature on the chamber's website is the Business Events calendar page in which we will catalog information about seminars, meetings and other events of interest to business. A link is being added to the home page and other pages throughout our site so you'll have easy access. If your group has an item to list, just click on the contact link or give Angela Pridemore, our workforce development manager, a call at 702-2722.

RESTAURANT BECOMES A CHAIN: Dakota's Roadhouse is now poised to go beyond Ohio, but for now, ones in Waverly and Washington Court House are in the works, according to owner Pat McAllister in a story in the Columbus Dispatch this week. He had the name trademarked for the entire nation. Success on Western Avenue, Jackson and Hillsboro has McAllister shooting for not less than two new ones a year in communities of 10,000 or less.

OTHER RESTAURANTS TAKE A HIT: The closing last Saturday of Portabellas on Paint Street comes on the heels of Blue Gill's and Fazoli's also calling it quits. With any kind of luck, all three will be up and running under new owners/operators shortly.

LEADERSHIP NOW MORE PROMINENT: To remove any confusion and to solidify the mission of the program, Leadership Chillicothe Ross is now the new name for the nine-month series of the chamber. The change was approved by the Board of Directors this week and was one of the suggestions made by the present class of what was known as the Pathfinders Leadership program.

ANOTHER GREAT QUARTER: Paccar, the parent company of the Kenworth Truck Co., had record earnings from its 24 percent increase in profit over the third quarter a year ago. It marked the 15th consecutive quarter of higher year-on-year profits. Sales of the Class 8 trucks which are made in Chillicothe are predicted to be up 25 percent by year end at 290,000 units and could be up another 8 percent in 2006.

TABLES GOING FAST: Only a few tables are left for the chamber's Annual Business Expo and Business After Business on Nov. 16. Make sure to grab yours before they're all sold out. Click here to learn how to reserve your space and for more details.
