MOVING IN TWO WEEKS: The timetable for the chamber to move to its new quarters on East Main Street is the end of the first week of November. Very little needs to be done to prepare the building, thanks to the great maintenance by Main Resource over the years. We hope to put in a change of address with the Postal Service as we open for business at 45 E. Main St. on Monday, Nov. 8.

BRIGHT AND EARLY RIBBON CUTTING: A good crowd was on hand early Monday morning on East Main Street when Tim Sublett, holding the scissors, cut the ribbon on his second Tim Horton's Restaurant in Chillicothe. The store is one of only about five in the chain with a new design inside that has the cases upfront and other improvements. Tim said this might not be the last one to open in Chillicothe.

INCLUDE LOCAL MERCHANTS WHEN LOOKING ONLINE: This holiday season, it's estimated that internet sales will increase 27 percent from last year. As a reminder to all members, many of our chamber brethren have websites where you can shop for gifts and items 24/7. This way, you can keep your dollars local and support chamber members. Check them out from our homepage under Member Web Sites on the left side.

CHAMBER NOW ACCEPTS CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS: If you'd like to pay for your chamber dues, networking luncheons or any other fees, you can use your Visa or MasterCard. We hope to have a secure site online soon, but in the meantime you can either stop by the office or call Jan at 702-2722 to make the arrangements.

"AUTHORIZED" MAP SALES START NOV. 1: The Performance Publishing Group's Dawn Plavak will begin calling on members Nov. 1 so you can reserve your space on the chamber's next city and county map. PPG is the only authorized chamber sales team, so if you're approached for a sale, make sure to ask. This is a fund-raiser for the chamber and an opportunity for local businesses to reach people new to the community, visitors and many others as the maps are widely distributed and used by local motels and the visitors bureau. The new map will be out next spring.

EXPO SPACE GOING FAST: More than 20 members have signed up for space at next month's combined Business Expo and Business After Business at the Horizon Technology Center. About 200 people attended last year.  Each exhibitor also will have a door prize to give away and new chamber members will be introduced. To reserve your space, call Rosie at 702-2722 or go online: Expo exhibitor signup form

RETIREMENT PLANS NETWORKING TOPIC: Jack Sayers, vice president of financial institution marketing for Great American Financial Resources in Cincinnati, will discuss small business and non-profit retirement plans, at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Chillicothe Country Club for the Networking Luncheon. Sayers' group is affiliated with the Citizens National Bank. To reserve your spot, go online: Networking Luncheon registration

AWARD-WINNING: Congratulations are in order for the three chamber members who recently won awards that showcase their professionalism:

  • The Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau on Thursday won the RUBY Award for its visitors guide from the Ohio Travel Association. There were 117 entries from 40 companies. The guide was a product of the same Performance Publishing Group which is handling the chamber map.
  • Whited Seigneur Sams & Rahe was the recipient of the first Chillicothe Gazette/Rotary Business Ethics Award. The accounting firm was one of 13 nominations received for the honor.

KENWORTH PARENT SHINES: PACCAR, the parent of the Kenworth Truck Co., reported record revenues and net income for the third quarter. Earnings were 86 percent ahead of last year for the quarter and net revenue was up 42 percent. It was the best quarter in the firm's 99-year history.

The Mexican fare (including the margaritas) from 17 East and the desserts from Simply Sweets went fast.

PREPARING A FEAST: The Chillicothe Country Club is offering to all the chance to learn how to prepare a holiday dinner from an expert when it holds a cooking class taught by Chef William Bell. He'll demonstrate how to prepare three appetizers, three salads, three entrees and three desserts at the class that begins at 7 on Thursday, Oct. 28. The cost is $10 and includes sample tastings, of course. Call 775-0150 to reserve your spot.

GRAND OPENING: The Chivaho Federal Credit Union is holding a grand opening of its new quarters at the VA Medical Center on Thursday, Nov. 4 from 5-7 p.m. Make reservations by calling Mary Ann Sowers at 775-3381.

KNOW YOUR 401k OPTIONS: Rathkamp Financial Services on Woodbridge Avenue is conducting a free workshop Thursday, Oct. 28 from 6:30-7:30 to discuss how a 401k works, its advantages, investing the funds and other retirement issues. To reserve a spot, call 775-1040.

VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor:

  • Smith Autobody, 391 Moss Hollow Road, by Mark Smith.
  • Central Industrial Supply, 1050 E. Main St., by State Electric Supply.
  • Varni LLC, 908 E. Main St.

WERE YOU INTO THE 50s: The Ross County Historical Society is planning a new exhibit next year, but needs help in finding items that date to the 1950s, such as clothing and accessories, toys, household items, music and local sports memorabilia. If you'd like to help, call 772-1936 and mention you read this in the chamber newsletter. Other society news includes a new book by its president, Pat Medert. It details the buildings on both sides of Paint Street from Water to Seventh and includes photos on every page. It's available for $39.95 at the museum on West Fifth Street.

ALSO AN AUTHOR: Dr. Jean Kerney, a former Chillicothe City Council member, and now with K&C Educational Associates, recently wrote "Thawing Frozen Dreams", a motivational and inspirational process for bringing forth unrealized dreams. In the book, she draws upon her life experiences and those of her sisters. To learn more, call her at 773-5559 or email her at kced1@horizonview.net.

NICE EXPOSURE: Dean Alexander, superintendent of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, was spotlighted this week in a Columbus Dispatch feature story.

CENTER SETS OPEN HOUSE: To learn first hand the need for a new levy, the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center is holding an open house Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. The center on Crouse Chapel Road also will have a chicken and noodles dinner. The chamber board has endorsed passage of this levy and also the one for the Pioneer Center on the Nov. 2 ballot.
