GATEWAY GETTING THIRD TENANT: Ground is expected to be broken late next week for the Carrs Supply Inc. facility in the Gateway Interchange Industrial Park on Ohio 104. AKM Building Systems will be the contractor for the 10,000 square foot building and grounds that will replace the firm's current facility on East Water Street. The firm handles wholesale sales and warehousing of heating/air conditioning equipment and plumbing supplies. It is based in Columbus, was established in 1917 and has outlets also in Washington Court House, Mt. Vernon, Athens and other cities. The deal was finalized recently when the Community Improvement Corporation sold the firm two acres south of the Horizon Technology building.

CELEBRATION DAY: More than 40 members of the Ross County Safety Council received checks totaling $63,462 at Thursday's luncheon at the Chillicothe Country Club. They were the ones who met all the requirements under the incentive program of the Bureau of Workers' Compensation to receive rebate checks equal to 2 percent of their workers' comp premiums. Statewide, the program resulted in businesses saving $7 million and membership in councils grew to 7,500 from 2,900. The Ross County chapter saw membership growth of 229 percent, fourth highest among the councils. The program also paid off for local taxpayers as Ross County government received a check for $14,613, the city of Chillicothe one for $5,087 and Chillicothe schools one for $2,066.

BAB AT COLLEGE NEXT WEDNESDAY: The Olde Canal Smokehouse, a co-sponsor, will provide the food and Mark Thacker the music at Wednesday's Business After Business at Southeastern Business College that is co-sponsored by the Chillicothe Animal Clinic. The event runs 5-7 p.m. on Western Avenue. Make sure to sign up: BAB registration

Several already are taking advantage of the three months' savings in dues along with a free ticket to the next Annual Dinner and a $10 Certificheck. Joining this week were:

SPECIAL DESIGNATION: Advanced Services Heating and Cooling took just seven months to become an elite dealer for Trane, the only one with the designation in seven counties in southern Ohio, according to owner David Pinkerton. Its customer satisfaction score of 97 percent far exceeds the 95 percent required by Trane. Check it out at www.advancedserviceshvac.com or by calling 773-4499.

GET RID OF OLD COMPUTERS --SAFELY: The Ross County Litter Control and Recycling Program will help you dispose of old computer equipment and cell phones on Saturday, Oct. 29. Monitors, CPUs, printers, keyboards, etc. will be collected from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fine Arts Building at the Ross County Fairgrounds. There is a $1 charge for large items. Cell phones will be donated to the sheriff's department for low-income seniors to call 911 only. Call 772-5326.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council ranks Ohio 40th among states on its Small Business Survival Index. The bad news is the state is 40th, the good news is it hasn't worsened from a year ago. The index measures items such as costs related to government, health care regulations, union regulations, crime rates and the number of government workers. It'll be interesting to see Ohio's rank next year when the commercial activity tax is factored in the index. Click the link to learn more.

YOU'RE INVITED TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY: Globe Furniture is giving away more than $4,000 in merchandise and cutting the birthday cake Saturday, Oct. 22 to mark the conclusion of its 100th anniversary in business celebration. Those who made a purchase from Sept. 28 to Oct. 22 will be eligible for the drawings. Globe hosted a Business After Business earlier in the year to spotlight the centennial year.

NEW PROGRAMS AT TRIPLE CROWN: A state-of-the-art boxing gym and a fully equipped karate dojo are part of a newly renovated upstairs at Triple Crown Sports on North Plaza Boulevard. An Open House and Family Fun Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature boxing and karate exhibitions. Batting cage tokens will be half price and basketball and volleyball games are available.

EXPANSION PLANNED: Flowers by Gene submitted plans to add a storage area behind its shop on Safford Avenue near Buckeye Street. The city has to grant a conditional use permit before construction can proceed.

ALL ABOUT LEADERSHIP: Shawnee warrior Tecumseh and Chillicothean Thomas Worthington, the state's first senator and an early governor, had those qualities that allowed them to lead their constituents to a greater good.  The Pathfinders Leadership class got an upclose look at both in this month's session on Wednesday. The class met at the Scioto Society's headquarters on Freshour Lane, then toured the outdoor drama facilities before the afternoon's session at the Adena Mansion and Gardens. Next month, the class learns more about conflict and anger management when it visits the Lighthouse Youth Center near Bainbridge for the day.

DEDICATED VOLUNTEER DIES: The chamber and its Networking Committee send their sympathies to the family of Mondel Clark of Frankfort. The advertising salesperson for Brown Publishing's Ross County Paper lost a lengthy battle with cancer this past week. She was an active member of the chamber and the committee, helping on many projects up until about a year ago.

MARK CALENDARS NOW: "30 Years of the Goosetown Astonishers" will be celebrated Thursday night (of course), Nov. 10 at the Crosskeys Tavern on East Main Street. It undoubtedly will be a performance noted for years.

GOLF BY THE SUN AND MOON: The Jaycees plan their annual Day/Night Golf Outing Saturday, Oct. 22 at its course on Pleasant Valley Road. The shotgun start is at 4. Winners get a greens fee pass for 2006. Kerr Wholesale and Pepsi are co-sponsors. Call Todd Ramsey for more information: 740-253-0973.

MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER WITH THE STATE: Nov. 15 is the deadline for businesses to register for the new commercial activity tax the state is imposing. Those with more than $150,000 in taxable gross receipts must file with the state. The registration fee is $15 when filing online at www.obg.ohio.gov or $20 if doing it by mail. Most businesses received a notice this week from the Ohio Department of Taxation.
