Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce
Weekly Update October 10, 2003
HR MANAGERS FORMING CHAPTER: The loosely formed Human Resources Council that started in the chamber several years ago is moving rapidly to become a chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management. The group is working on bylaws and hopes to become an affiliate of SHRM before the end of the year. It would become known as the South-Central Ohio Human Resource Council.
SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS: Word is that a Tim Horton’s will be coming to East Main Street by no later than next summer. The owners of the one that opened recently on North Bridge Street at Pawnee Road apparently are planning for a second one near Renick Avenue. It will be across the street from where Bob Evans is just about ready to open its third restaurant in the former Shoney’s slot.
WORKOUT PLACE OPENS MONDAY: Curves for Women will be opening its facility off Western Avenue (across from the new Dakota’s Restaurant) with a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration Monday at 9 a.m. All chamber members are invited.
DAKOTA’S PLANS TO OPEN OCT. 31: It seems a little scary that construction proceeded so smoothly, but the new restaurant on Western Avenue is set to open on Halloween, Oct. 31. It will employ more than 100 people and will feature original artifacts from the Dakotas along with what is being billed as the coldest tap beer in town. The outside fireplace will no doubt end up as a favorite gathering place.
NEW LINK FOR DEVELOPERS: Another new link was added to the chamber’s homepage on the Internet, tied to MSN’s Neighborhoods feature. It details demographics and other features by zip code. The link is for 45601 since that encompasses much of Ross County. Finding data for other zips is a snap. Check it out at www.chillicotheohio.com under the “Economic Development” section.
BAB IS WEDNESDAY: Southeastern Business College will host Wednesday’s Business After Business with a co-sponsorship from the Chillicothe Animal Clinic. Make sure to register for the door prize and to register to attend: BAB registration. Hours are 5-7 p.m.
CARLISLE WORK CONTINUES: Unfortunately not on the landmark itself, but rather in trying to find people who will take on the renovations and restore it to its former grandeur of more than 100 years ago. Stay tuned for details.
NORTHSIDE CONNECTOR CLOSER: Anyone out on Ohio 104 around the Veterans Affairs Medical Center might have noticed the stakes with pink ribbons marking the future path of the Ohio 207 extension over to U.S. 23. The right-of-way is being acquired now and hopes are to get it out for bid by springtime. That could mean that by late 2005, a whole new traffic pattern for the county will have been created. Especially when Ohio 104 itself becomes four-lane from the city limits to the new Ohio 207 connector.
PLANS ARE IN THE WORKS: Your chamber’s Board of Directors decided on some future courses of action when it met this past week in a 1.5-day retreat at Deer Creek Resort. Details on the plans will be announced in coming weeks, but for now, be assured that continued work on economic development and better services for members are on the list.
ADENA GETS NEW DESIGNATION: The restored home of Thomas Worthington, Adena, was officially added to the list of National Historical Landmarks in a ceremony Thursday evening. Bill Laidlaw, the new executive of the Ohio Historical Society, was on hand to deliver remarks to the approximately 80 people in the new visitors center. In the photo, the plaque designating the landmark is unveiled by, from left, James Barrington, Laidlaw and Dean Alexander of the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park. The landmark commemorates the home of the Worthingtons which is one of the few remaining homes designed by noted architect Benjamin Latrobe.
CHAMBER SKIERS TAKE NOTE: The Mansfield-Richland Area Chamber of Commerce is offering again its special “Chamber Family Ski Days” at the Clearfork and Snow Trails ski resorts. The dates are Jan. 3-4 at Clearfork and Jan. 10-11 at Snow Trails. Chamber members received sizeable discounts for skiing or snowboarding. For more information, download a flyer at www.mrachamber.com.
QUALITY GROUP TO TOUR PLANT: The Scioto Valley Section of the American Society for Quality will hear from Randy Price, regional manager of Wausau Homes, then tour the plant before a buffet dinner. Those interested in attending the Thursday event should contact Bill Hoey at 740-703-2705 or bill@whoey.com.
VENDORS LICENSES: Here’s who’s received a vendors license recently from the county auditor:
PHOTOS FOR YOU: Have you been featured in a photo in this newsletter? Or on the chamber’s website, maybe at a BAB, Networking Luncheon or Safety Council? If you’d like a print suitable for framing or other purposes, get in touch with Doug Etling at Vickers Photographic Studio, the chamber’s official events photographer. He can be reached at 774-1490 or at the studio at 32 E. Second St.
CERTIFICATE WINNER: CPA Michael Balestra was the winner of the $75 gift certificate for Damon’s Restaurant for completing an employment survey for Southeastern Business College.
PATHFINDERS GET HISTORY LESSONS: The area’s heritage was the main topic for this week’s session of the Pathfinders Leadership class as it toured the Ross County Historical Society Museum, Adena State Memorial and the Hopewell mounds. This was after the leadership lesson given at the society’s new Heritage Center. Next month’s focus: Education.
