RETREAT PROVIDES DIRECTION: Your weekly newsletter is a little late this week as the Board of Directors and staff got together for a day and half at Deer Creek Resort to reflect on past accomplishments and map a direction for the future of the chamber. While some strengths were noted (such as communications, events and financial viability), five areas were targeted for improvement or emphasis: economic development role with CIC, city and county; Pathfinders Leadership series; member retention and attraction; member recognition; and networking. Action plans to address the issues were devised and will drive the chamber in coming months. In the photo, NewPage's Lee Bendtsen reports on his group's findings for member retention and attraction. Click here for more photos from the retreat.

SPEAKING OF NEW MEMBERS: The chamber's annual membership drive continues next week as we hope to add to the ranks of the 581 members we have now. Current members get $25 for each new member they recruit. Advertisements on the campaign are running for six days and personal visits will be paid next week by board members and the Networking Committee to targeted recruits. Here are three who joined this week:

  • Kimberly DiFrango - Gemologist, 14 S. Paint St., Suite 61, 779-1771, www.difrango.com.

CONDOLENCES: The chamber joins the many others in the community expressing our sympathies to the McKell family and Horizon employees on the sudden and unexpected death of Bobby McKell, vice president of operations for Horizon Telcom. Like so many in his family, Bobby was active in serving the public as president of the Paint Valley Board of Education and as a coach in the 'Twin Youth League.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: The ribbon was cut last week signaling the official start to Herbie Strange State Farm Insurance. Family, friends and clients were on hand for the ceremony at the office on North Plaza Boulevard next to the Italian Garden.

READING VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT: Children in grades K-4 with reading difficulties are the targets for the OhioReads tutoring program. If you'd like to help, call Karen Hunter in the city schools at 775-4250, ext. 105 or contact an elementary school.
