CHAMBER SUPPORTS REZONING: A letter from the chamber has been issued to Chillicothe City Council supporting legislation that would rezone a few acres on Western Avenue to allow for a Walgreens store and another outlot for future development. The letter points out the area is mostly commercial now, including the adjoining property, that the owners' property rights must be respected and that the would-be developers have worked diligently with the city administration to take care of potential traffic problems. The development would raise an estimated $40,000 in real, personal and income taxes a year that would benefit the city, the county and city schools.
PHOTOS NOW ONLINE: As always, Doug Etling of Vickers Studio captured the essence of chamber events with his shots at the recent annual golf outing (Golf outing photos) and the September Business After Business at Rathkamp Financial Services (Rathkamp BAB photos). As with any of the photos, check with Doug about getting prints at 774-1490. In photo above, John Brown of Valley Vista Golf Course (right) gets ready to receive a steak from chef Dennis Murphy. NEW BAKERY COMING: Lenora Kelly and Brian Curtis are expanding their storefront presence by opening a specialty bakery later this month at 16 W. Water St. The owners of Grinders with a Touch of Class on North Paint Street plan to have pastries, upscale breads and wedding cakes for sale on a carry-out basis. They'll open about mid-month after the facade work is completed on the Ed Kunzelman building. SAFETY COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP EXPLODES: The new incentive program of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation offering organizations discounts on their premiums if they joined a safety council resulted in more than 50 new members for the Ross County chapter. Membership now numbers about 80 in the council, up from 28 on July 1. Thursday was the deadline to join to qualify for the discount, but any company interested in improving its work environment can join at any time. Many of the members are expected to attend the next monthly luncheon of the council. Tim McDermott from the regional BWC office will talk about new changes in Ohio law that concern the Drug-Free Workplace Program. That's on Thursday, Oct. 14. Paint St., known as the Barrett Building. "Our new facility provides much more flexible space allowing us to expand the training and orientation programs we offer employees and job seekers," said Jane Highland, area manager. CELEBRATING ITS NEW HOME: Picture This is holding a Fall Open House Saturday, Oct. 9 at its new location adjacent to E.M. Smith Jewelers at 1334 N. Bridge St. The event runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature exhibits by local artists, including hand-painted furniture and glassware. Call 773-5966 for more information. FORM TEAMS, RECRUIT MEMBERS, GET CASH: That's the chamber's Membership Drive in a nutshell. An announcement of the drive and how to earn up to $1,000 in cash was e-mailed earlier this week. A list of prospective new members will be made available next week to teams and individuals participating. For all the details, click here: Membership Drive details PATHFINDERS LOOKING FOR A PROJECT: Each year, participants in the Pathfinders Leadership program must work on a community service project as part of their program. The general guidelines of the project are that it must be completed in one day and there is to be no fund-raising (except maybe in the way of in-kind materials and/or labor). If your civic group or organization is thinking about a project for which it could use some major help, let us know so we can pass it along as a possibility. The Pathfinders themselves choose the project and submit it for approval to the Steering Committee. Please e-mail us with your ideas within the next couple weeks. mjones@chillicotheohio.com VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor:
CHIVAHO OPENS FOR BUSINESS: Board members, staff and well-wishers braved a chilly morning this week to officially cut the ribbon on the new building for the Chivaho Federal Employees Credit Union at the VA Medical Center. The credit union now has 2,400 investors. The building replaced offices inside the VA and includes an ATM and a drive-through. DOWNTOWN STUDY GETTING UPDATED: Four years ago, Andreas Otto, an Ohio State University student from Germany, studied small town downtowns as part of his master's thesis. Chillicothe's district was part of that study. Today, Andreas is back in the community to check on changes made in the last few years as part of his studies toward a doctoral degree. SINGLE OUT YOUR HERO: The local chapter of the Red Cross is looking for nominees for its Hero Awards. The agency is looking for people who perform selfless, heroic acts in the community. Call 772-2014 for more information. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday.
