HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: Two of the three teams from the Jaycees' organization took top honors in the Annual Golf Outing of the chamber held Thursday at the Jaycees Public Golf Course on Pleasant Valley Road. The team of (from left) Andy Tomlinson, Chuck Kitchen, Kevin Calvin and Joe Kutschbach won the scramble tournament with a score of 16-under par 56 while the team of Seth Brown, Matt Sutherland, Todd Ramsey and Tony Judd came in second with a score of 59. Twenty-seven teams teed it up at the outing that featured skill prizes on every hole and more than 20 door prizes, thanks to generous donations from chamber members. A complete listing of scores and skill prize winners is available by clicking this link: Golf outing results More photos from the outing will be available next week. Next year's outing will be Sept. 22 at Valley Vista Golf Course near Bainbridge. GROUND IS BROKEN: Work has begun on the new 12-screen, stadium seating Danbury Cinemas behind Zane Plaza. No date for completion was available. BIKE TRAIL CONNECTOR CLOSER: While playing in the chamber's golf outing Thursday, Brad Cosenza, Chillicothe's parks and recreation director, received word the city has been awarded an $880,000 grant to help construct a pedestrian/bike bridge over High Street to connect the new trail west of the street to the established 2.5-mile trail that goes near East Main Street. The city needs to come up with $200,000 to match the grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation. CALLING ALL CHILI CHEFS: The Chillicothe Social Society is looking for those who think they make a mean chili to enter the first Chili Fest to be held Oct. 16 at the Elks. Judging categories include individual, business, restaurant/bar, civic group/church and political candidate/representative. The entry fee is $20 and forms are available online at www.chillicothesocialsociety.com and at the Cross Keys Tavern, Clear Channel Radio and Ross County Home Lending. Proceeds from the event benefit Rock for Tots. DRIVE CAN BE A FUND-RAISER: In a couple weeks, the chamber's annual Membership Drive gets under way officially, but now is the time to think about pulling together a team to go after the $1,000 to be given to any team signing up 10 or more new chamber members. It's a great way to raise money for your favorite cause while showing non-chamber members the benefits of belonging. Stay tuned. BAINBRIDGE GETS NEW GROCERY: Terry DeGarmo, owner of the Frankfort IGA, broke ground almost two weeks ago for the new Valley Fresh IGA in Bainbridge. He said it will be a full-line grocery with gas pumps, have 14,600 square feet on four acres and will be open in about six months. NEW WELLNESS GUIDE AVAILABLE: The guide contains several initiatives businesses can implement, from the simple to the extensive. It is from the Healthy Ohioans Business Council which consists of 16 companies with a proven commitment to employee health and wellness. The programs might be able to help lower health insurance premium costs which have risen an average 11.2 percent in the past year, the fourth year for a double-digit increase with more expected on the way. The guide is available at www.healthyohioans.org. SAFETY WORKSHOPS OFFERED: Employers can take advantage of a series of workshops to be offered by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation at its "Crossroads of Safety and Health" Nov. 1-5. The bureau will be running concurrent sessions each of the five days at its offices in Pickerington allowing employers to get in good training in a compact amount of time. Subjects to be covered include construction, ergonomics, general industry, industrial hygiene and safety culture. Continuing education units will be awarded for each workshop.
