MORE THAN A PLACE ON THE MAP: The visits this week by President George Bush and vice presidential candidate John Edwards certainly brought great exposure to Chillicothe and Ross County. With the national media trailing around and showing the entire country glimpses of our area, more people will remember the region in years to come. In addition, we as a community got a chance to hear first-hand from the candidates for the highest offices in the land. The excitement ignited by the visits is contagious and spills over into many other aspects as the community looks to move forward.

PATHFINDERS OFF AND RUNNING: The 12 participants in this year's Pathfinders Leadership class got started with the welcoming reception at the Chillicothe Country Club and the first session at the VA Medical Center this week. They have eight more sessions running through May next year. At the first session in the photo above, Marie Bridenbaugh (left) and Pam Nichols get to know each other better. This year's class:

  • Kim Baker, Ross County Job and Family Services
  • Marie Bridenbaugh, Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center
  • Michele Conrad, Kenworth Truck Company
  • James Ford, Ross County Job and Family Services
  • Judy Harness, Adena Health System
  • Douglas Hennig, Ohio University-Chillicothe
  • Pamela Nichols, VA Medical Center
  • Jason Rhoades, Perfection One Collision Center
  • Loura Roberts, Chivaho Federal Credit Union
  • Eric Stevens, Horizon Telcom
  • Dr. Ernest Sutton, VA Medical Center
  • Todd Thomas, Kenworth Truck Company

RATHKAMP READIES FOR BAB: A hog roast, music by Mike Boyle and Friends and confectionary door prizes from Coffee Central are on tap as well as beverages at Wednesday's Business After Business at Rathkamp Financial Services from 5-7 p.m. All chamber members and their employees, as always, are invited. Please register though: BAB registration

NATIVE SON RETURNING: Tokey Hill, who honed his world-champion karate skills while growing up in Chillicothe, is returning home. And he's teaming up with Triple Crown Sports by joining its group of experts to offer karate and sports enhancement classes to the children of the area. A reception to re-introduce him to the community was held Thursday at the Plaza Conference Center by Triple Crown. For reminders, Hill was the first American to win a gold medal at the World Karate Championships in 1980, a six-time national champion and served as head coach of the USA National Karate Team for eight years.

LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS?: Then the next Networking Luncheon might be a real opportunity. Julie Fox from the Small Business Development Center at the OSU South Centers in Piketon will give an overview of how the center can help almost any small business in this area. It's a free resource just waiting to be used. The luncheon is Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club. In addition to the program, each organization gets 30 seconds to introduce themselves and make a pitch. Make sure to register in advance: Networking Luncheon registration

Cici's Pizza - Fresh taste at a great price.LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR EXPANDING: Michael Martin, owner of the Cici's Pizza in Zane Plaza, broke ground for his second venture in the Staples Center in Athens this week with plans to move into the Lancaster area next. The Athens restaurant should be open by Oct. 18.

CORRECTION ON TIME FOR ARTS OPEN HOUSE: The Open House for the South Central Ohio Arts Council is 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Pump House Center for the Arts. An incorrect time was in last week's Update.

BUDGET FOR PARTICIPATION AND EXPOSURE: It won't be long before many will begin the budgeting process for 2005. When you do, don't forget about the chamber. In addition to your dues, make sure you budget money for networking luncheons, golf outing participants and sponsorships, the Business Expo and Pathfinders Leadership. Drop a note in your budget folder today.

SAFETY DEADLINE LOOMS: Less than three weeks remain for companies to take advantage of the new incentive program offered by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation to join the Ross County Safety Council. Companies can get a 2% rebate on their premiums by following a few steps. But the first one is you must join the council by Sept. 30 to qualify. More than 50 local companies are now members of the council. For more details, click here: Ross County Safety Council
