New group aims to increase awareness and provide help to local attraction

Block out the evening of Saturday, March 3 next year so you'll be able to attend the first costumed ball sponsored by the Friends of Adena Mansion and Gardens. The ball at Ohio University-Chillicothe is in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the mansion that served as the home for Thomas Worthington, Ohio's first senator and sixth governor.

The recently formed Friends of Adena group "will work in cooperation with the Ohio Historical Society to increase public understanding and knowledge of Adena, act as a liaison between the site and local community, conduct and provide volunteer support for site programs, projects and special events, advocate the site's needs to government officials and develop and implement fundraising programs for the site."

A Board of Directors was recently seated and a set of bylaws adopted. It is only the third such group approved by the state historical society. Linda Herrnstein is chairman of the board with Mary Anne Brown as vice chairman, Kyrsten Vogel as secretary and Kathy Alderman as treasurer. Site Manager Jane Rupp serves as executive secretary. Julie Lambert is chairing the committee for the ball.

Information and applications to become a "Friend" are available at the chamber's Welcome Center at 45 E. Main St.

RETAIL FACE CHANGING NEXT WEEK: The grand opening ceremony of Sam's Club on North Bridge Street Thursday at 9:30 a.m. will signal the arrival of another major retailer in Chillicothe and the region. Store Manager Jen Noska has been coordinating the training and logistics of getting the store opened for the past few months. Memberships in the club are being taken the rest of this week and early next (until the store opens) at its temporary site behind TLC Oil Lube on North Bridge Street.

OPULENT SOURCE GROWS INTO NEW QUARTERS: The computer networking, testing and repair business now is operating out of 15 E. Main St., next to Huntington Bank. Owner Vince Perhach says the move will accommodate a broader range of services. He said the tech staging, service and repair area will feature essential testing equipment while there is room for growth, possibly including a showroom for new and used equipment.

HELP OUT A LOCAL ARTIST: Tabatha Lusk, an art teacher in Adena schools, is the Ross County representative in the Ohio Farm Bureau's "Grow A Masterpiece" competition and needs your vote. Each county submitted an 18-by-18 canvas that had to include the shape of the county and the words "Our Ohio". All 88 were on display at the state fair and votes were taken for the best. Voting is still possible by going to www.ourohio.org and following the prompts to the works of art. Her canvas was on display at last week's annual meeting of the Ross County Farm Bureau in which Abe Blusk took over as president from Mike Corcoran.

PARENT COMPANY CHANGING: McDonald Investments, with a branch office on West Second Street, is being sold as part of a deal by KeyCorp with UBS Financial Services. The deal was announced Wednesday and includes only the McDonald's branch network of 51 offices in 14 states and their 620 employees. The deal is expected to close in early 2007.

USEC DONATIONS AID HOSPICE AND SCOUTS: Donations of $1,000 each were made recently by USEC to the Hospice of Adena Health System and the local Boy and Girl Scouts organizations. Public Affairs Manager Angie Duduit presents a check to Sharon Wills of the hospice program.

CHILI-FEST RETURNS IN THREE WEEKS: The annual Chili-Fest of the Chillicothe Social Society is set for Saturday, Sept. 30 on East Second Street. Teams interested in participating in either the cook-off portion or the cornhole tournament may pick up entry forms at the chamber's Welcome Center at 45 E. Main St. or the Ross County Advertiser on West Water Street. Proceeds again will benefit Rock for Tots.

THIRD ANNIVERSARY COMING UP: The Gift Post at 601 E. Main St. is serving refreshments and conducting daily drawings to celebrate its third anniversary Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16. Customers will receive a gift with each purchase. The store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

NEW TOASTMASTERS CLUB FORMED: The Camp Sherman Toastmasters Club is holding its charter ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 4:40 p.m. at the VA Medical Center. All federal government employees in the area are eligible to join. Contact President Jennifer McDonald at 773-1141, Ext. 7469.
