CHILLICOTHE ROSS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Weekly Update

September 6, 2002

MOVING FORWARD: The Business Growth Council of your chamber is off to a good start. This past week, the five chairmen of the special committees got together with Bill Beatty and Mike Hall, the chairmen of the council itself, and me to hammer out the next steps. The committees (and their chairmen) will concentrate on Light Industry (Ed Behanna of PPG), Retail (Allen Rupiper of Adena Health System), Services (Ken Shelton of Manpower), Downtown (Matt Allen of the City of Chillicothe) and Data Collection (John Wilson of Horizon Chillicothe Telephone).

The first four committees will be identifying potential new businesses for Ross County, determining how best to make sales pitches, then seeing that the pitches are made. The last committee will be working to gather the facts and figures the other four committees will need to make the sales pitch possible.

If you’re interested in being a part of this economic development push, get in touch with the chairman of the committee on which you’d like to serve.

EXPO DEADLINE NEAR: Just a reminder that to get a booth at our first Regional Business Expo, you’ll need to call Cami right away. More than 35 have signed up already. The event will be Friday, Sept. 27 (a VIP night for exhibitors and special guests only) and Saturday, Sept. 28 at Shoemaker Center at Ohio University-Chillicothe.

SAFETY COUNCIL NEXT THURSDAY: Following a summer vacation, the monthly Safety Council luncheons get back into full swing this coming Thursday (Sept. 12). It will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. Speakers will be Jon White and Bill Fetters of American Electric Power who will talk about their company’s success with safety. Cost is $8. Call Carrie for a reservation.

SLOTS STILL AVAILABLE: For the annual chamber golf outing Thursday, Oct. 3 at Valley Vista Golf Course near Bainbridge. A flyer was included in last week’s Dateline, but if you’d like one faxed, give us a call here at the office. Or if y9our company would like to contribute an item as a door prize or for all participants, let us know.

HAVE YOU RESERVED YOUR DIRECTORY SPACE? The deadline to get your ad in next year’s chamber Buyers Directory is Friday, Oct. 4. This will be a special edition of the directory since it will be available during this bicentennial year in which we’ll have plenty of visitors to the chamber getting a copy. Call Connie Smart at 772-2165 for the details.

GREAT RESPONSE: Many of you already have faxed or e-mailed us with the number of employees in your firm. This number, for many, is used to determine your dues for the coming year. If you haven’t already done so, just e-mail or fax us with the number of full-time and part-time employees. Notices about any changes in dues should be out in late November with actual invoices hitting the mail in late December.

AN EVENT TO ATTEND: Next Thursday at 3 p.m. is the groundbreaking for the 2003 Legacy Project of the Ross County Historical Society. The Ross County Heritage Center will be a showcase for this and future generations to learn about life in Ross County when it’s finished. All are invited to attend the ceremony which will be on West Fifth Street between the museum and McKell Library.

HATS OFF TO GOODY’S: Robert Goodfriend, CEO of Goody’s, was on hand Friday morning to help employees of the Chillicothe Mall store celebrate the grand re-opening of the store. New flooring, a brighter setting and more clothing of the types customer said they want are part of the changes made there the past few months. Stop in and see the differences.
