NEW EATERIES SET TO OPEN: Two restaurants in Chillicothe and one in Jackson are set to open before Thanksgiving. Tim Horton's second location in the city on East Main Street plans to open by the end of October as construction continues on the structure, shown in the photo. Sean Immell's Blue Gill's casual seafood place with an outdoor patio and replica of the SS Minnow on North Bridge Street is nearing an opening, but no date has yet been set. Pat McAllister's second Dakota's Roadhouse opens the first week in November.

ARTS GROUPS CONSOLIDATE: The South Central Ohio Arts Council plans to bring to this area celebrity concerts, entertainers, lecturers and theatrical productions, according to Tom Hamsher, the president of the new group that combines the former Area Artist Series and the Boston Pops Committee. An open house is set for Sunday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Pump House Center for the Arts. The group is seeking advisors for future programs and events. Check out its website: www.scoac.org. The first event for the new group is a night with Mickey Rooney and his wife on Oct. 9 at the Smith auditorium.

IMPACT IS EVIDENT: Travelers to Ross County in 2003 helped support 4,000 jobs, according to the most recent economic impact figures made available by the state to the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau. These travelers spent $146.6 million in the county during the state's bicentennial celebration year, up from $100 million in 2001. They also contributed $7.8 million in taxes to the county.

WHAT'S YOUR PASSION?: Several new chamber programs and events could be in the offing, but we need to know if there's enough interest. In case you didn't see the earlier e-mail, check out the opportunities here: Call for volunteers

REMNANTS MAKE WAY FOR PROGRESS: Construction crews excavate and remove the remnants of Chillicothe's former "traction line" train service before repaving East Main Street. Old railroad ties and bedding had been paved over too many times and didn't provide the best possible foundation. The city's paving program is now in high gear.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The annual Downtown Christmas Open House will be Nov. 19-21 this year. Planning is underway now.

LOOKING FOR WORKERS?: Job Bank had a record 67 postings in July. Just as important, this chamber-maintained site, which is part of our Workforce Development Program, had 2,767 visitors and was viewed 9,990 times in the last month as it has become a highly popular place for those seeking employment. For employers, it's a no-cost alternative to find the right employees. To list your openings, give us a call at 702-2722.

NEW CHAMBER MEMBER: Proscan Imaging of Chillicothe provides MRI and radiology services at its new location on North Bridge Street in the new building in front of Elder-Beerman. Dr. Stephen J. Pomeranz is the owner; 614-989-7037, www.proscan.com.

KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS COMING BACK: the next Workforce Academy is a way to learn how to meet and exceed your customers' expectations so they continue to return and remain loyal. Kellie Wolfe, a business and industry consultant with the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center, will provide the details and lead the discussion at the event on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Workforce Academy registration

NOW IN SIX COUNTRIES: The expansion of Petland into Korea with a store in Seoul means the Chillicothe-based international company will be in six countries. The others, in addition to the U.S., are Canada, Japan, Chile and South Africa. In Korea, Petland has a development agreement with the 108-year-old Doosan Corporation. "The Korean pet market is in its infancy. We see great potential for growth," said Chul-Jung Kim, a Doosan officer. In photo, Petland founder Ed Kunzelman (seated to the left) goes over plans with Greg Hudson, David Yoon, Chul Jung Kim and Frank DiFatta.

CHEESE CAKES FOR PRIZES: Coffee Central's cheesecakes will be part of the door prizes at the next Business After Business at Rathkamp Financial Services on Woodbridge Avenue. Tim Ellis will handle the hog roast, Damon's the side dishes and Mike Boyle and Friends the music for event on Wednesday, September 15 from 5-7 p.m. Register now: BAB registration

SAUNTER ALONG THE RIVER: If you've ever thought about meandering along the 967 miles of the Ohio River, there's a new website to help. The Ohio Department of Transportation was one of the funders from three states. Check out lodging, dining and other details at www.ohioriverscenicbyway.com.

WORKERS COMP SEMINAR APPROACHING: There's still time to register for the Sept. 20 Workers' Compensation University of the Ohio BWC in Columbus. Admission is free and it's a great way to learn how to run efficient programs and receive new material. Register online at www.ohiobwc.com.
