AADVANTAGE TENT FITTINGS EXPANDING: Former chamber board chairman Mike Hall broke ground Friday morning on an addition that will nearly triple his present space and mean at least six new manufacturing jobs in Ross County. Aadvantage, a supplier of accessories for tent manufacturers and end users, is adding 10,000 square feet to its facility on Pleasant Valley Road across from the Jaycees Golf Course. The expansion will allow Aadvantage to make the wooden poles and stakes that are being used across the United States and around the world as well as by the military in places such as Iraq. The company also is expanding into commercial lighting for the tents and that operation involves using three other local firms. The contractor for the addition is chamber member AKM Building Systems.

BAB PHOTOS NOW ONLINE: More than 30 photos from the Business After Business last week hosted by the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau are available on the chamber's website, including this one. Click here to see all of them taken by Doug and Dustin Etling of Vickers Photographic Studio: BAB photos

SATISFIED CUSTOMERS: In its class of heavy-duty trucks, the Kenworth Truck Company ranked highest in customer satisfaction in a recent J.D. Power and Associates survey. Categories included ride, handling and brakes, engine and interior as well as ease of entry and exit and fit and finish. Check out the subsidiary of PACCAR at www.kenworth.com.

CENTER IS A HUGE RESOURCE: The Small Business Development Center of the OSU South Centers based in Piketon has helped many an enterprise in Ross and surrounding counties get off the ground and to grow business over the years. It also can help with unique problems you are encountering in your business. To learn more, Julie Fox will be the presenter at the next Networking Luncheon of the chamber on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Chillicothe Country Club. To hold your spot, register here: Networking Luncheon registration

USEC AHEAD OF SCHEDULE ON CENTRIFUGE: By applying for a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week, USEC is seven months ahead of its schedule to get the American Centrifuge project in Piketon up and running. The plant, using the latest and most efficient technology, is expected to be operating by the end of the decade. The NRC will conduct extensive safety and environmental reviews before granting the license. When operational, the plant is expected to employ 500.

DIRECTORY DEADLINE APPROACHING: If you're looking to be part of the chamber's 2005 directory that will have more photos and more information than previous years, make sure to get with Connie Smart of Panther Publishing by the Sept. 17 deadline. In addition to being a buyers' guide for members, the directory also goes out in relocation packets and is used by real estate agents and others. Give Connie a call at 772-2165. The directories will be available by the first of the year.

MEMBERSHIP GROWS: The chamber now has 573 members, a 10 percent increase from a year ago. Those members represent about 16,500 employees or more than half of Ross County's workforce.

NEWSLETTER STARTING THIRD YEAR: This edition marks the first issue of the third volume of Weekly Update. When it started in August 2002, the hope was to do this periodically, but it soon became apparent there was a real need to communicate with members regularly and in a more timely fashion. The response has been great. Make sure to send us items about your business or organization so we can let the more than 750 readers know what's happening.

A LABOR DAY GIFT: Before heading out for the holiday, think about stopping by Liberty Village on Western Avenue on Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. to donate a pint of blood to the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Door prizes will be awarded.

NEW WEBSITE: Network Financial Services has a new website to check out: www.nfschillicothe.com.

SCHOOL AUCTION SET: In the need of a school building? Check out the auction by Chillicothe City Schools Sept. 25 starting at 10 a.m. in the former McArthur Elementary School on Columbus Street. In addition to the building and land that will be auctioned separately are seven buses, a truck with a bucket lift, pianos, chairs, desks, tables and other items. For more information, contact either Frieda Cyrus at 775-4250 Ext. 108 or Treasurer Stacy Overly at Ext. 109.

CHECKING THOSE BACKGROUNDS: The South Central Ohio Human Resource Council is sponsoring a seminar on employee background screening on Thursday, Sept. 16, noon-2 p.m. at the First Capital Craft Mall. Featured presenters are Chip Ramsey of OPENonline and attorney Pricilla Hapner. The cost is $10 payable at the door and the deadline to register is Sept. 10. Register with Traci Haubeil at th@infosight.com.

10 YEARS AND GROWING: The First Capital Craft Mall off Ohio 159 north of Chillicothe is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. New at the mall, which hosted the chamber board meeting this week (shown in photo above), are a deli restaurant, conference/meeting room and a garden area that overlooks the hills. Jeanie Balzer said the mall now attracts upwards of 275,000 customers a year. Check out the latest at the mall on its website: www.imagineifyouwill.com. If your business is interested in hosting a board meeting, email us: mjones@chillicotheohio.com.
