(Editor's note: Economic development, using technology to your advantage and being more of an advocate for business were some of the themes forwarded during the annual convention of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives held last week in Orlando. Despite the distraction last Friday evening when Hurricane Charley plowed through the area, the convention provided good opportunities to learn what other chambers around the country are doing to better serve their members. A report of ideas and thoughts gleaned from the convention is on its way to the Board of Directors to be used to help shape future activities of this chamber.--Marvin Jones, Executive Director)

STREET PARTY ROCKED: Wednesday's Business After Business on Second Street brought out the crowds to enjoy the weather, the Goosetown Astonishers, the food from Damon's, street rods and each other. Sponsored by the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau, the event also raised some money for the Chillicothe Art League with the auction of the hand-painted flower pots that had been on the courthouse steps most of the summer. Next month's event promises to hold more of the same as Rathkamp Financial Services on Woodbridge Avenue has some nice plans for chamber members and their guests. Set aside Wednesday, September 15 and it's not too early to register now: BAB registration

U.S. 35 ON FASTER SCHEDULE: The Ohio Department of Transportation has negotiated an "acceleration agreement" with the contractors for the widening project on U.S. 35 that will have the majority of the four-lane route open in December with the rest to be done by July next year. The project from Richmond Dale to Chillicothe had fallen behind schedule and wasn't expected to open for traffic until next summer. This is great news for all who travel the last two-lane section from the West Virginia border to Dayton. Kudos to ODOT for efforts to stay on target.

NEW OVERTIME RULES GO INTO EFFECT: Monday is the effective date for the new regulations governing payment of overtime for most businesses. The new standards include new regulations for "white collar" exemptions, among many other changes. Information is available on the website of the U.S. Department of Labor: FairPay

FRESH PRODUCE AT THE MARKET: An abundance of tomatoes, egg plant and other vegetables will be at the weekly Chillicothe Farmers Market, according to sponsors. The market runs 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue.

HARTSOCK WATCH: According to an article a week ago, Ben Hartsock is doing well in his first training camp with the Indianapolis Colts. Here's what Head Coach Tony Dungy had to say about his tight ends: "We have some guys who I think are going to develop into some really good players. ... Our young guys -- Chad Bartoszek, Ben Hartsock -- have done a very, very good job."

MONUMENT TO BE DEDICATED: The new World War II Memorial on Park Street will be dedicated in ceremonies Saturday, Sept. 11 in the Veterans Memorial Park. Activities begin at 1 p.m. the memorial is the result of efforts by the Chillicothe Veterans Memorial and the Ross County Veterans Council.
