NOVEMBER BALLOT ISSUES TOUCH BUSINESS
DIRECTLY: If petitions for all five issues are approved, Ohioans might
be spending a lot more time at the ballot booth come Nov. 7. And if three
are approved, they could a dramatic effect on some or all businesses in the
state. Already, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce has joined forces with the Ohio
Retail Merchants Association and the National Federation of Independent
Business/Ohio to form a group to oppose the issue being pushed by labor
groups to not only increase the minimum wage to $6.85 an hour, and tie
future annual increases to the Consumer Price Index in addition to making it
easier for groups to obtain personal information. Two issues address indoor
smoking with one calling for an outright ban and the other allowing for
limited smoking areas in places such as taverns and restaurants. Another
would make way for gambling at race tracks and in Cleveland and the last
would repeal changes in workers' compensation laws approved by the General
Assembly. These issues will be in addition to a good-size slate of political
races and local issues. The chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee is
going to be busy the next couple months. To learn more about the issues and
a chance to meet those running in the election, plan to attend the chamber's
Candidates Reception on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Ross County Service Center.
BRING YOUR WALLET TO THE NEXT BAB: While the food and beverages won't cost a dime, you'll want to take home one of the neatly decorated flower pots from the Chillicothe Art League when they are auctioned at Wednesday's Business After Business. The Majestic Performing Arts Center courtyard on East Second Street is the venue again for the downtown BAB from 5-7 p.m. A special dancing exhibition also is planned in addition to the auction which begins at 5:45. Make sure to register: BAB registration
CHILLICOTHE TO HOST BIG APPALACHIAN TOURISM SHOW NEXT SPRING: The "Spotlight on Appalachia" travel show will be held at the Ross County Fairgrounds next March, thanks to a successful bid by the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau. CVB Executive Director Kyrsten Vogel said the two-day show draws visitors and group travel planners in an effort to promote tourism throughout the Appalachian area. Exhibits will spotlight arts, crafts, food, heritage and goods indigenous to the Appalachian region. Ross County was chosen, Vogel said, because of its central location in the state, amenities offered at the fairgrounds and the ability to draw people from outside the Appalachian region. OPEN HOUSE SET: The Ohio State University South Centers is holding an open house at its Piketon campus off Shyville Road on Friday, Sept. 8. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. and includes exhibits by the horticulture, aquaculture, forestry, small business development and other centers. Following the tours around 6 p.m., guests are invited to sample the locally raised freshwater shrimp and berries. Reservations are requested by calling Beth Rigsby at 740-289-2071 or 800-297-2072 Ext. 110 by Sept. 1. NEW MANAGER: Heather Hall is the new manager for Curves for Women at its locations on Western Avenue and off Bridge Street. TRADE SHOW FOR EDUCATORS COMING UP: If you'd like to break into doing business with schools, the Ohio School Boards Association Trade Show attracts more than 10,000 superintendents, treasurers, principals and other school officials who make business decisions daily. This year's show runs Nov. 13-14 at the Columbus convention center. The minimum charge for a booth is $775. To learn more, contact Robin Charles at 800-589-6722 or r_charles@osba-ohio.org. UNITED WAY STARTS NEW PROGRAM: "Second Saturday" is a new outreach initiative of United Way of Ross County in which donations will be taken to help serve its member agencies. Each month will feature a "special need" which is school supplies this month. Staffing and management is being handled by United Way partner "James 218".
