DEADLINE APPROACHING: Only about six weeks remain for organizations to join the Ross County Safety Council to be eligible for the 2% premium discount program. Sept. 30 is the last day to enroll in the council. And the next meeting of the group that counts toward the mandatory eight is Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club. Participants will help decide future topics for the luncheon meetings in a roundtable discussion. To learn more about the discount program and to register for the next luncheon, click here: Ross County Safety Council FUTURE HIGHWAY PROJECTS ON AGENDA: The widening of Ohio 104 from U.S. 35 to the new Ohio 207 connector now ranks 41st on the list of future projects of the Ohio Department of Transportation. And it's the only project in Ross County on the list. For a chance to move it higher, folks can attend a meeting of the Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC) on Thursday, Aug. 26 at the Comfort Inn. The meeting is one of only five to be held around the state. It begins at 10 a.m. SPEAKER KNOWS DEVELOPMENT: J.M. "Jack" Schultz, the speaker for the chamber's 2005 Annual Dinner on Feb. 17, runs his own development firm in Effingham, Illinois and has studied extensively what makes some small towns more effective in luring new business and industry than others. And he rates Chillicothe in the Top 100 in the nation for its efforts. His study led to the book, "Boomtown: The 71/2 Keys to Big Success for Small Towns." Copies are available at the chamber office for $14. For more on Schultz, his firm and the book, visit www.agracel.com. NEW PRINTING PLAYER: Precision Printing of Columbus and Cleveland is now servicing the accounts from Craftsman Printing of Chillicothe. The new firm said it plans to maintain a presence in Chillicothe with a local office. CHAMBERS ZERO IN ON ELECTION: Both the national and state chambers of commerce have established comprehensive websites devoted to the Nov. 2 election. You can register to vote, check out all the candidates running for Congress and the statehouse and you can learn more about where the candidates stand on important business issues. The U.S. Chamber site is www.voteforbusiness.com and the Ohio Chamber site is www.ohiobusinessvotes.org. Both are very impressive in the amount of information available. And if you need to know the names and addresses of local elected officials and other election matters, check out the site of the Ross County Board of Elections: www.electionsonthe.net/oh/ross. NEW DRUG LAW ON HORIZON: On Oct. 13, a new state law will take effect concerning workers' compensation in which the burden of proof shifts to the worker who will have to provide evidence that an injury was not caused by drugs or alcohol. Employers will need to post a written notice that informs employees they might not be eligible for workers' comp benefits if they are injured while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance not prescribed by their doctor. BWC sent notices of the new law earlier this week. Details are available at www.ohiobwc.com. FESTIVAL TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE: The inaugural Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival slated for Chillicothe Sept. 10-11 is now selling tickets. Discounted tickets are available at the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau on East Main Street. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children for one day; $15 for adults and $8 for children for two days; and a Family Pass for both days for $35. Prices will be higher after Sept. 3. Festival organizers also are seeking more volunteers. To learn more about the festival, check out www.sostoryfest.com. NEWEST MEMBERS: Here's who's joined the chamber recently:
