THE CONSTRUCTION EDITION
We're in the heart -- and heat -- of summer 2005 which means it's the height of the construction season. Once again, Ross County is blessed with several projects that mean real progress for the community and will mean real jobs and more opportunities to bring more jobs. Above, work on the Ohio 207 extension from Ohio 104 to U.S. 23 is well under way to meet its completion deadline of Fall 2006. The scene above is south of the Ross County Fairgrounds looking east toward the Scioto River. One of the biggest construction projects of the year -- the additions and renovations to Chillicothe High School -- is just now getting started and will last two years.

LAST CALL FOR LUNCHEON: Rep. Bob Ney will be the guest speaker at the chamber's Legislative Luncheon Tuesday (Aug. 9) at the Christopher Conference Center. It's a good opportunity to hear about upcoming issues Congress will address and to ask him about issues you're facing in your business. It starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Christopher Conference Center. Make sure to register, though: Legislative Luncheon Registration ADDITION TO SITE: Folks -- both local and otherwise -- can now get easy access to what's happening in our local schools from the chamber website. We've taken plenty of calls over the years concerning schools and now we can point people to our website where we've added a page that contains links to all of the websites of Ross County's schools, including private ones that are members of the chamber and to Ohio University-Chillicothe and Southeastern Business College. Check it out: School websites NEWEST MEMBER: The Better Hearing Place, 1532 N. Bridge St., recently joined the chamber through Melody Wipert; 775-4327, mwipert@horizonview.net. BIG HONOREES: Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Central Ohio gave honors at its annual meeting recently. Board President Mike Throne was named Board Member of the Year and Nelson Coleman received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Throne also recently was promoted to general manager of the Chillicothe Gazette. GOOD NEWS FOR PIKETON PLANT: Just as it ramps up construction to bring the American Centrifuge online, USEC in Piketon can take great pride in that the number of its potential customers is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. According to the Kiplinger Letter, 15 new nuclear power plants will be operational in the next 15 years. As the sole U.S. producer of enriched uranium for nuclear plants, that certainly bodes well for the industry. MORE DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE: Twenty-five chamber members now are offering discounts to other members as a benefit of belonging to this business organization. Also, our apologies to Jeremy Forcum for giving the wrong number for his JSF Inc. discount on a billboard. The correct number: 701-3675. The latest making an offer:
CHECK OUT THE POTS: Fifteen nicely decorated flower pots that are now on the courthouse steps downtown will be auctioned at the Wednesday, Aug. 17 Business After Business in the Majestic Theatre courtyard. Proceeds benefit the Chillicothe Art League Scholarship Fund and the artist. As usual, the event runs 5-7 p.m. with the auction starting at 6. And make sure to register to attend: BAB registration ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR THE PAINTS: Friday's game at home against Rockford will mark the 1,000th game in the 13-year history of the Chillicothe Paints. In commemoration, the team is giving away $1,000 to one fan, compliments of Pepsi, USEC, Budweiser and Central Center Merchants. Game time is 7:05. ONLY ONE LEFT: The June 2006 Business After Business is the only one not reserved for next year. We'll soon be scheduling BABs for 2007. If you'd like the June event, give us a call. First come, first served. But we can put you on a waiting list.
VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor's office:
