Progress barometer holding steady In one gauge of economic activity, Chillicothe and Ross County are showing signs of maintaining a torrid pace set a year ago. The value and number of commercial building permits issued the first six months of this year trail only slightly the activity of a year ago, with one major exception. The city department issued 106 permits with a construction value of $10.3 million the first half of this year compared with 104 permits with a value of $34.9 million the first half of 2005. Take away the one permit for $26 million for the high school renovation and activity actually is up. At the county department, 70 permits with a value of $5.7 million were issued January through June this year compared to 69 permits for $6.5 million a year ago.

Educational ANOTHER CHURCH PLANNING MAJOR EXPANSION: Tabernacle Baptist Church at Main and Hickory streets submitted plans to the city for a new addition of 19,407 square feet with another entrance off East Second Street. The $1.6 million plans include a stage-basketball court area, places for youth activities and offices. This comes on the heels of the new construction for Chillicothe Baptist Church off U.S. 35 near High Street. CANDIDATES INVITED TO A RECEPTION, NOT A DEBATE: The chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee this year wants candidates in the Nov. 7 election to know about the issues facing business. That's why an informal reception is set for Tuesday, Sept. 19 rather than the previous practice of a debate-style format for the candidates. Candidates in all statewide races (including governor), district, regional and local races have been invited to hear from chamber members. The setting will give chamber members a chance to chat one-on-one and in small groups with the people who will be leading our government in the years to come. The event is 7-8:30 p.m. in the Ross County Service Center.
COUNCILMAN TO ADDRESS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS: Eric Rinehart will discuss issues facing Chillicothe City Council as well as the legislative process in general at the next meeting of the Young Professionals Network. Light appetizers and a cash bar will be available on Thursday, September 14 at the Chillicothe Country Club. Admission is $5. Make sure to register so a name badge will be ready: YPN meeting registration RECORD MONTH FOR THE WEBSITE: In July, 10,034 people visited www.chillicotheohio.com, the most in any one month since the website started more than eight years ago. That is an increase of 42 percent from a year ago. The number of page views jumped 19 percent to 38,995. LEADERSHIP CLASS HAS ONLY FOUR SLOTS LEFT: As of Thursday afternoon, we had commitments for 16 people for the next Leadership Chillicothe Ross class that starts September 13. The steering committee is capping registration at 20 to allow maximum effectiveness. If you or your company is interested in one of the final four spots, go online at www.chillicotheohio.com to complete and submit the application. The program runs through May.
BAINBRIDGE IGA AND ROBIN FOWLER STATE FARM INSURANCE CELEBRATE GRAND OPENINGS: Terry DeGarmo and his wife Donna Miller had family, friends, associates and customers on hand this week to celebrate the opening of their new store on U.S. 50 at the eastern edge of the village. A few years in the making, this store is the second for them, joining the Frankfort IGA. Robin Fowler also had her family on hand as she opened her State Farm Insurance office at 45 W. Second St. downtown. CHAMBER DIRECTORIES AVAILABLE: The chamber directory is a great way to introduce new people to the business community as well as great advertisement for members when used in waiting rooms. If you need copies, we've got plenty available. Call us at 702-2722 to arrange delivery or pickup. Advertising sales for the 2007 edition will begin shortly, so expect a call or visit from Connie Smart of LongPoint Media. WORKFORCE ACADEMY TAKING RESERVATIONS: For a great lunch and some stress relief, check out the next Workforce Academy on Wednesday, August 30 at the Ross County Service Center. Kay Frances will have you holding your sides when you leave as she relates the benefits of laughter as good medicine. And the cost is only $5. Workforce Academy registration A SITE TO BOOKMARK: Ever wonder how to get in touch with a local organization or get questions about social service agencies? Don't forget about 2-1-1 in Ross County handled by the Scioto Paint Valley Mental Health Center. In addition to calling that number, you also can go online at www.irissoft.com/spvc and conduct a search. The site and service is an offshoot of the printed "Volunteer Connection" produced by the partners for Healthier Ross County. It's a super resource on the resources available in this and surrounding counties.
