        Volume 2, Issue 47                            Friday, July 30, 2004

WE'RE STILL ON A ROLL: As announcements trickle out from week to week, it can be easy to lose sight of all the good commercial and industrial activity taking place in Ross County these days. So, if your friends ask what's going on lately, you can tell them about:

  • The completion of the widening of U.S. 35 east of Chillicothe, quite possibly by the end of the year.
  • The 80,000 square foot expansion of Wal-Mart into a supercenter, to be completed by next March and which will add maybe 200 more jobs.
  • A new stadium-seating style movie theater behind Elder-Beerman.
  • A new casual seafood restaurant, Blue Gill's, which hopes to open next month.
  • A new branch of Oak Hill Banks on Western Avenue.
  • The Carlisle Building WILL be renovated.
  • Major remodeling at Sears in the Chillicothe Mall.
  • A second Tim Horton's, this one on East Main Street.
  • A second Walgreen's, this one on Western Avenue.
  • Renovation of New York New York into the Italian Garden restaurant.
  • New quarters for the Chivaho Credit Union at the VA.
  • Land becoming available for another strip mall on North Bridge Street.
  • The prospect of 200 more jobs being added by the Kenworth Truck Company to the nearly 600 already added in the last year.
  • And apologies to those additions and expansions which aren't listed.

AND MAYBE MORE ON THE WAY: Activity also has picked up as the Community Improvement Corporation is working with several prospects considering the former WearEver building, a site in the Gateway Interchange Industrial Park foreign enterprise zone and another site in the city. All just confidential prospects for now, but obviously Ross County is in play for site selectors.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD: The CIC also elected new board members this week with Chillicothe Law Director Toni Eddy, developer Steve Houseman and Adena CEO Allen Rupiper coming on the board. Going off by virtue of term limits are Pat McAllister and Jan Carpenter Green. Bob Evans remains chairman of the board.

GOOD NEWS ON THE SOUTH SIDE: This week's report of surging profits for MeadWestvaco can be taken as a good sign locally as the reasons cited were increased productivity and a better paper market. Earnings per share for the second quarter were 24 cents a share, blowing away analysts' expectations of 9 cents.

CHAMBER HAS PART-TIME SALES POSITION: Increasing our membership numbers, sponsorships at the golf outing and Expo and selling advertising for the newsletter and website will be the responsibilities of the sales director for the chamber. The position is part-time and allows for a highly flexible work schedule. To learn more, check it out here: Job Bank

BANKRUPTCY COULD BE ENDING: Chillicothe-based Horizon PCS said this week it had lined up the financing of $125 million in senior notes which is key to coming out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy later this fall. The notes plus settlement of a lawsuit earlier with Sprint bode well for the company.

DECEMBER BAB SLOT AVAILABLE: A cancellation makes the December 15 Business After Business now available. That slot and the one in September 2005 are all that's left for the next 17 months. If interested in being a host, give us a call at 702-2722. Pictures from the last BAB at Family Dental Center on Western Avenue have been posted on the chamber's website: July BAB photos

BRAINSTORMING AT SAFETY LUNCHEON: The August 12 luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council will be an interactive session in which ideas for future luncheons will be harvested. And this luncheon also counts toward the mandatory eight businesses must attend to be eligible for the 2 percent premium rebate next year. The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club. To learn more about the rebate incentive program and to sign up for the luncheon, click here: Ross County Safety Council

POSTAL WOES: Several members have expressed ongoing problems ever since the sorting of local mail at the Chillicothe Post Office was moved to Columbus. This includes problems with delivery to local PO boxes. If you've encountered problems, let us know by sending us a message to us at Postal service issues.

VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor:

  • H&K Sound, 1688 Western Ave.
  • Jiffy Lube, 245 Woodbridge Ave. (formerly Sprint Lube)
  • Gina's, 999 Blacksmith Hill Road

GOLF OUTING REGISTRATION STARTS: Signups for the chamber's Annual Golf Outing have started. The event will be Thursday, Sept. 23 with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at the Jaycees Public Golf Course on Pleasant Valley Road. To get your foursome entered and to reserve a tee or green sponsorship, visit this link: Golf Outing signup.

READY OR NOT, NEW OT RULES START NEXT MONTH: If you aren't prepared to address the new Department of Labor regulations on paying overtime that go into effect next month, you're not alone. A study by Hewitt Associates said at least 20 percent of companies won't meet the compliance deadline. Under the new rules, anyone making less than $23,660 will be eligible for time-and-a-half pay working more than 40 hours a week while the vast majority of those making more than $100,000 will not be eligible. To learn more, check out the federal link: Department of Labor FairPay site

CHANCE TO SEE THE BUCKEYES PLAY: The OSU Ross County Alumni Club is holding its annual raffle in which the winner will get two tickets to six home games this year. Tickers are $25 each and only 250 will be sold. Proceeds benefit the Bob and Betty Jones Scholarship Fund for Ross County students going to OSU. The drawing is Aug. 21. Contact Nelson Coleman at emerald@bright.net for details.
