STEP BY STEP: While nearly every community would love to land that 500-employee new plant, the fact remains that most new jobs are created by existing business and industry and by local entrepreneurs looking to make their mark. By encouraging and working with the latter two, the community can continue to diversify its economy. In the case of new businesses, Ross County had at least 81 seriously pursuing the idea and 34 that had gone on to the next stage the first six months of this year. That’s according to the Small Business Development Center of OSU based in Piketon which conducts sessions here at the chamber. For those thinking of starting their own business, it’s a super resource in terms of developing a business plan and in learning about other resources available. If you’re interested, give Business Development Specialist Patrick Dengel a call at 740-289-2071 or visit the center on the web: http://southcenters.osu.edu.

MORE VISITORS THIS WEEKEND: About 65 members of the Blue Star Mothers of America are in town Sunday through Wednesday for their national convention. They will be honored in ceremonies at the stadium they helped build back in 1954 at the local VA medical center. Last week, Kyrsten Vogel of the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau led a group of 36 tour group operators from northeastern Ohio on a familiarization tour of the area, including the Majestic Theatre shown here, in hopes they will schedule groups to visit here in the future. The next big group expected is about 200 for the American Ex-POW convention Aug. 18-21.

MAKE YOUR POINT KNOWN: While Rep. Bob Ney will provide an update of issues before Congress at the chamber’s Legislative Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the Christopher Conference Center, he’d also like to hear from you about the issues that affect your business. A question-and-answer session will follow his remarks. Make reservations now: Legislative Luncheon registration

STRONG FAMILIES MAKE FOR A STRONG COMMUNITY: And that’s why your chamber’s Board of Directors voted its endorsement of the Children’s Services levy on the ballot Tuesday. We encourage members and their employees to support the one-half mill levy to provide Children’s Services with the resources it needs to care for those kids most in need. Polls are open 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

NEWEST MEMBERS: Here’s who’s joined the chamber recently:

  • Old Canal Smokehouse, 94 E. Water St., by Dane Straub, 779-3278.
  • March of Dimes, Central Ohio, Columbus, by Jennifer Brunelle, 800-686-2569, http://marchofdimes.com/ohio

HIS WORK WILL BE MISSED: Congratulations to Stan Planton, the librarian at Ohio University-Chillicothe’s Quinn Library since 1979, who is retiring Sunday. Stan kept many local people informed of events and news of local interest, but printed outside the area, for many years, providing perspective on issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. A well-deserved respite is in order.

NEWEST DISCOUNTERS: The chamber’s member-to-member discount program continues to grow with the list now topping 20. You can see who’s offering what on our website at all times: Member-to-Member Discounts. Here are the latest who are offering something special:

  • Neil Coleman Insurance has discounts on a variety of special insurance programs, 773-2661.
  • JSF Inc. will take $100 off the installation of your vinyl message to go on a billboard on U.S. 35 at Pleasant Valley. 701-3676. Also, visit its new website at www.jsfinc.com.
  • Woodland Heating and Cooling Services will give chamber members 25 percent off a residential service call for HVAC or handyman repairs during normal business hours. 663-9663, www.woodlandhvac.com.
  • Up-Close Advertising has 20 percent discounts for chamber members. 740-493-1951 or anthonyr122@aol.com.

AND DISCOUNTS DO WORK: Just ask the 36 chamber members taking advantage of our partnership with Compensation Consultants Inc. for workers’ compensation premiums. Those 36 are saving a projected $250,000 on their premiums this coming year by joining the group rating program. In every instance, each member is saving more than the cost of their annual dues in the chamber. To see if your company or organization can get the same type of savings, contact Jennifer Purdin at CCI at (614) 526-7225 or email her at jennifer.purdin@ccitpa.com.

USEC PROVIDES SUPPORT: Piketon’s USEC recently provided financial support for two Ross County programs: $5,000 to Ohio University-Chillicothe toward the new Child Development and Family Service Center and $1,000 to Junior Achievement to help fund its programs that reach 1,600 students in grades 4-12 in the county.
