Loss of heritage sad;

opportunities abound for rebirth

No matter the outcome of the structures involved in this week's fire on East Second Street just west of the Majestic Theatre, an opportunity exists to create new uses for an area of downtown Chillicothe.

Without a doubt, the fire was a setback. Any loss of a part of our architectural heritage is a time of sadness as it can never be replaced in the same manner as the originals. In this case, though, the owners of the most effected structures (Bob Althoff and Wilbur Poole) are committed spiritually and financially to a vibrant downtown district. And they have the resources to do what's best for their properties.

The Majestic structure remains intact and the Chillicothe Civic Theatre, in the true spirit of "the show must go on," plans to perform "Bye, Bye Birdie" there this weekend. Chamber members who feel they might have equipment, supplies or any other materials to help the Priscilla Smith and the Majestic staff to get back on their feet might want to get in touch at 772-2041.

As for the plans to host the Aug. 16 Business After Business in the courtyard, they continue until further notice, but it would be a great way to celebrate the rebirth of the area. Stay tuned.

Artist Eric Henn said he is working on a project in Fairfield County also, but hopes to tackle the Horizon mural in earnest in a week or two and be finished in about 30 days. More than 200 chamber members and guests braved the heat and humidity for the BAB downtown.
