Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce
Weekly Update July 18, 2003
CANDIDATES PRIMED AND READY: More than 180 candidates are expected to be on the November ballot, according to Nancy Bell at the Ross County Board of Elections. About 20 of them showed up Tuesday evening for the chamber’s first Candidates School. They heard first-hand from Mrs. Bell and Nora Madru, the deputy director of the elections office. The event received widespread coverage, including local newspaper and radio in addition to an article in the Columbus Dispatch the day of the event. Since no city or township or school board seats will be up next year, the next anticipated school is January 2005.
KEEP THE HEAT ON: It’s good to see that the city’s Design Review Board has turned to Law Director Ed Bunstine to explore ways in which to ensure the Carlisle Building renovations stay on track. Getting Main Street opened at the earliest possible time must remain a high priority, not to mention Paint Street. And we would hope the city’s Engineering Department would hold a training session within a week or two to brief all employees on the Design Review Board rules and regulations so as not to impede business people who want to make improvements.
RISE ABOVE THE CROWD: The local Bicentennial Commission is making available sponsorships of the hot air balloons in the Ross County Banking Center’s Bicentennial Balloon Regatta to be held August 7-9 in the Yoctangee Park Annex. For $500, your company will receive its name and/or logo prominently displayed on one of the balloon baskets for the entire regatta and a ride in the balloon for one person during the Saturday evening race (weather permitting). It’s also a chance to compete with other sponsored balloons. For details, contact the commission at 709-2003.
JACKSON GETTING JOBS: Frozen foods company Luigino’s plans to add 300 jobs in Jackson County to its assembly line for frozen pizzas. The company already employs 1,057. The $38 million expansion is being funded in part by $10 million in state loans and bond funds.
WELCOME NEWEST MEMBERS: KC Raceway on Blain Highway and Century 21 Darfus Realty, which will have an office on North Plaza Boulevard, both joined the chamber family this past week.
VENDORS LICENSES: Here are those who recently applied for licenses through the Ross County Auditor’s office:

A SMASHING BAB: Rubbing elbows was the order of the day at Wednesday’s Business After Business at DeGarmo’s Canal House Pastas. Sponsored by the Western View Communities, the event had people all over the patio area, vying for the raffle prizes and making connections. In the photo, Vicki Streicher and chamber board members Ken Shelton and Bill Digges take advantage of DeGarmo’s pizza. Next month’s affair stays in the central business district as the Downtown Associates host the event on Aug. 20 on Paint Street between Water and Second streets. And it’s not too early to register: BAB registration
DATELINE OUT IN TWO WEEKS: The quarterly edition of our printed newsletter, Dateline, will be out around Aug. 1. There’s still time to reserve space for an insert.
