Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce

Weekly Update    July 11, 2003

IT’S REALLY NOT POLITICS: You don’t have to declare allegiance to a political party to run for township trustee, township clerk, any school board seat, village council seat or village mayor. But you do have to file petitions by Aug. 21 to be on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election. And to learn more about the process, the chamber is sponsoring its first Candidates School Tuesday in conjunction with the Ross County Board of Elections. Nancy Bell and Nora Madru will step everyone through the process, point out common mistakes made by filers and answer all questions. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Ross County Service Center. No pre-registration is required. And if you needed any more incentive, the trustee’s position in Scioto Township (which includes the city of Chillicothe) pays $8,900 per year and includes benefits such as the state employees retirement fund and the availability of health insurance. The clerk’s position pays $15,600 and also includes the benefits. Township salaries vary by population and revenue base.

BAB REMINDER: Next week is Business After Business week and if today’s weather can hold through then, the event at DeGarmo’s Canal House Pastas Wednesday 5-7 p.m. sponsored by Western View Communities can’t be anything but great. Heck, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, it’s going to be a super time for networking. Make sure to register: BAB registration. (Photo courtesy Rob Robson)

WELCOME NEWEST MEMBER: Bill Hirsch of the Atwood House bed and breakfast at 68 S. Paint St. joined this week. For a complete listing of all 56 members who have joined since the deadline for this year’s membership directory, check the ad in the Gazette Sunday and Tuesday.

DO YOU WANT BETTER LEADERS AND MANAGERS?: Then don’t forget about the chamber’s Pathfinders series for which you should have received a separate e-mail or fax this past week. Now is the time to look around your organization to see who might benefit from this extraordinary experience. Classes start in September and the cost is only $550. Details, including an application: Pathfinders

A BENEFIT BEFORE THE BENEFIT: “A First Capital Evening” is being sponsored by the local Bicentennial Commission on Friday, Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Yoctangee Park as a kick-off to the Boston Pops concert the next night.  Chili Sauce will provide the jazz music and NYNY will provide the catering. Two items to be auctioned are guest conductorship of the Rocky theme during Saturday’s concert and a table for 10 the night of the concert, a $1,500 value.  Tickets at $35 per person are available at the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Hampton Inn and Suites. For additional information, contact Linda Goodman at 773-1616.  If your business is interested in donating an item for the silent auction, call Cami Carroll at the chamber, 702-2722, or email ccarroll@chillicotheohio.com.  All items must be worth at least $100. Proceeds benefit the commission.

NO AFFILIATION: Be aware that an outfit soliciting ads for a Ross County map has no agreement or affiliation with your chamber. Universal Map apparently has indicated it will distribute the printing of only 5,000 maps through various locations, including the chamber. Untrue. For the best map of both Chillicothe and Ross County around, this chamber has it, compliments of the Performance Publishing Group and our sponsors. Free copies are available just by calling or stopping by.

CALL FOR DATELINE INSERTS: The next edition of Dateline, the chamber’s quarterly printed magazine, will be published around August 1. If you’d like to have an insert, the deadline is July 25. The magazine goes to all 506 members of the chamber and the insert charge is $100. Call the chamber office at 702-2722 for more details.

JOB BANK GAINING STEAM: More and more local businesses are turning to our free Job Bank to list openings. And best of all, we’re hearing about the great success many are having in finding qualified candidates. This includes Movie Gallery, one of the new firms opening in the Bridge and Second streets building with Family Dollar. Check all the openings now: Job Bank

YOUR BLOOD FOR A CAR WASH?: That’s what Herrnstein Chrysler-Mitsubishi is offering Tuesday at its dealership on Marietta Road Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. While you are donating at the Bloodmobile, the folks at Herrnstein will have a shining car waiting on you when you’re done.

ACCURATE AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS: Jessica Woodruff of Piketon High and Matt Jaruwonnakorn of Zane Trace High (shown at right) are the winners of the two $1,000 scholarships given by Accurate Heating and Cooling and Bryant/Habegger. Eligibility includes involvement in school athletics, maintaining a GPA of at least 2.75 and outstanding membership both on and off the athletic field.

LAST CALL FOR REGISTRATION: An EEOC Overview and a discussion of the Americans with Disabilities Act are the topics of Tuesday’s Workforce Academy. The program by an analyst of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is $5 per person and will be 8:30-11 a.m. at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. To register: Workforce Academy registration

KENTUCKY TOWN THINKS ABOUT DRAMA: Apparently some folks in the Maysville, Kentucky area (about 60 miles southwest of here) are considering starting an outdoor drama. A reporter from the town’s newspaper talked to some people in this area to learn about the impact of “Tecumseh!” here.

VENDORS LICENSES: As a new feature of Weekly Update, we’ll publish the names of those new businesses who apply for vendors licenses through the Ross County Auditor’s office. Here are the most recent:

JOBS GROW THROUGH SBA LOANS: The Small Business Administration reports that 411,000 jobs were retained or created through the first three quarters of this fiscal year by businesses receiving loans backed by the SBA. And the number of businesses receiving the loans is up 36 percent from a year ago. For more, go to www.sba.gov.
