NEW OHIO TAX STRUCTURE IN PLACE TODAY: A lower sales tax and a new commercial activity tax became effective Friday after Gov. Bob Taft signed the state's two-year budget bill. Income tax rates are being cut 4.2 percent this year with subsequent reductions the next four years for a total of a 21 percent decrease from 2004 rates. Personal property, corporate franchise and other taxes also are being affected. Many businesses already have consulted their accountants on the potential impact of the changes and are making plans to take advantage of them. More information is available at www.tax.ohio.gov. MAJOR RENOVATIONS AND A NEW NAME: Approximately $400,000 was spent renovating the Best Western Adena Inn on Bridge Street, according to General Manage Dinesh Patel. The motel has 42 guest rooms, two with Jacuzzi suites, and all with 27-inch televisions with full cable and high-speed internet service. The former Holiday Inn also has a banquet room that can handle 150 people. Check it out: www.bestwestern.com/adenainn SMALL BUSINESS CAN COMPETE: Many of the principles and processes used by Wal-Mart to become the world's largest retailer also have application for many small businesses. Michael Bergdahl, author of "What I Learned from Sam Walton: How to Compete and Thrive in a Wal-Mart World," will share his experiences of working with Walton in a video presentation at the office of Edward Jones representative Gary Seitz on Tuesday, July 12 at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will include discussions on the POCKETS strategy, how smaller business can stay competitive and why customers are more important than products. Make a reservation by calling the office at 775-6400. LET US HELP YOU ATTRACT EMPLOYEES: If your business from time to time looks to recruit top-level managers or professionals from outside the area, the chamber can help by putting together packets of brochures, maps and other information that will help convince the prospect this is a great place to bring their family. We can customize the packets to your specific needs (housing, demographics, etc.) and have them ready quickly. Just give us a call at 702-2722. ATTACKING THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM: The Adena Health Foundation, using funds to be generated from this year's Scioto Valley Golf Classic on July 30, will launch an EMT Pilot Project that will train EMTs in attaching 12-lead electrocardiograms to chest pain patients, transmiting the data to the emergency room doctor and carrying out the doctor's orders before the patient reaches the ER. Right now, only paramedics are certified in the procedure. There are 231 EMTs in Ross County which is a top county for high mortality rates among patients experiencing heart attacks or cardiovascular disease. In addition to this project, the foundation plans to award about 45 scholarships to students planning to enter the health care field. www.adena.org/AdenaFoundation EVENING PARKING AVAILABLE: When you're downtown in the evening or on a weekend for an event or dining or for any other reason, don't forget the Welcome Center's parking area behind the building at 45 E. Main St. It's convenient and has easy access off the street. During weekday daytime hours, we ask that you use it only when visiting the center. MEMBER ADDED TO DISCOUNT PROGRAM: Broadview Mortgage this week became the 14th chamber member to offer a discount to other chamber members. Broadview Branch Manager Dianna Hay said the usual fee for an appraisal (valued at $250-$350) will be waived for chamber members wishing to finance or refinance a mortgage for their home.
