TEE IT UP BEFORE YOU PARTY!: The Chillicothe Jaycees are offering a free-of-charge, nine-hole scramble golf outing to the first 26 teams that register before their July 20 Business After Business. Kerr Wholesale is a co-sponsor of the BAB. The scramble will have a shotgun start at 3 p.m., allowing plenty of time to take part in the normal BAB festivities at the shelter that will include music from Sidetrack. For those wishing to golf, call the Jaycees golf shop at 775-7659 and make sure to give the names of all four players of your team. Also make sure to register for the BAB itself by clicking here: BAB registration

RICART LEAVES THE AREA: According to vendor license reports and word on the street, the Nourse Auto Mall has taken ownership of the Ricart Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership in Shawnee Square. No other details were available.

REMINDER TO COUNCIL MEMBERS: When it was first proposed months ago, the rezoning of the Barlow property on Western Avenue was supported by the chamber Board of Directors. The rezoning was approved by the city's Planning Commission and the city's Engineering Department made sure traffic plans provided the best possible flow of vehicles in the area where a new Walgreen's is planned. When it comes time to vote on the zoning reconsideration, we hope council gets it right this time and allows for the development that will provide a better tax base for the city and schools and provide much needed jobs in an area that already is teeming with commercial enterprises.

BOARD VOTES SUPPORT FOR KIDS: At its meeting this week, the chamber Board of Directors also voted its support of two issues affecting the children most in need of help in the community. The board voted an endorsement of the additional levy for Children's Services that will be on the ballot in a special election in August. The one-half mill levy will mean approximately only $1 more per month in property taxes for the average Ross Countian. A small price to pay to make sure abused and neglected kids have safe shelter and good food. The Child Development Center planned on the OU-C campus by the MRDD and the university also was endorsed by the board. About 6,000 kids will be served by the new center that will provide essential education and health services to the special-needs children. A fund drive is under way now to acquire the final monies to ensure it becomes a reality. Kenworth gave $75,000 earlier this month and recently Huntington Bank gave $10,000 as noted in the photo. From left are Ed Behanna, Wayne McLaughlin, Rick Marriott and Delbert Bochard.

JOINING THE CHAMBER STAFF: Angela Pridemore, who helped laid-off Thomson employees learn new skills to find new jobs, becomes the chamber's workforce development manager on Monday. Angela replaces Lynette Reed who, for the past 2.5 years, has introduced dozens of area businesses to the resources of the Jobs One-Stop on East Second Street and who has made the chamber's Job Bank the number one place for businesses to list openings and for people to find employment. Angela has worked for the former MeadWestvaco and comes to us from the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center where she has been working with Columbus Public Schools on the Job Match program with Dr. Tom Snyder. More than 50 applied for the position.

CHAMBER OFFERING NEW SERVICE: Need a notary? We've got one. Executive Assistant Jan Tremain can notarize your documents free of charge as another chamber service. Just call ahead to make sure she's there.

IT'S A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN: The former Twin Elementary School in Bourneville has been transformed into a true Ross County youth center by the Police Athletic League. Under the direction of Sheriff Ron Nichols, the league has painted and spiffed the facility and is offering programs that now attract upwards of 100 kids every weekday evening. Boxing, volleyball, nutrition classes, computer skills and other subjects are on the curriculum. At the chamber's board meeting there this week, the league announced it will soon occupy a good portion of the former McArthur School on Columbus Street in Chillicothe to provide some of the same programs. That's thanks to the generosity of Life EMS which is leasing the school and grounds from the city school district. (If your business would like to host a board meeting or sponsor one at a neutral site and receive this kind of publicity, give the chamber a call at 702-2722.)

NEWEST MEMBERS: Here's who's joined the chamber recently:

TWO TENANTS AND JUST GETTING STARTED: The Endeavor Center at the OSU South Centers in Piketon has signed its first two businesses to start their enterprises there with a goal to have six within the first year. Steve Shepherd, director of the "business accelerator" (don't call it an incubator), detailed the objectives of the center when he spoke at the chamber's Networking Luncheon this week. He noted another goal is to have the $4 million center self-sufficient within five years. For Ross County businesses looking to expand more into southern Ohio, this could be a gateway to making it happen. Shepherd can be reached at shepherd.156@osu.edu.
