CHAMBER SUPPORTING FAYETTE'S BID FOR HONDA: Since it appears Ross County has less than a slim chance of landing the new Honda manufacturing plant and its 1,200 employees, both this chamber and the Ross County commissioners are supporting the efforts through correspondence to Fayette County officials to land the plant near the outlet malls off U.S. 35 and I-71. Fayette is hoping to show broad-based regional support exists to provide ALL the resources Honda will need to be successful. In Ross County's case, it includes our people and their great work ethic. The letter, in part, reads:

"Officials in Fayette County can count on the support of this chamber and other agencies involved in workforce development to provide Honda of America with skilled employees should your county be chosen for the new assembly plant. Our chamber has been working cooperatively with state and local organizations for more than five years now to ensure the best workforce possible for the region for years to come.

"As a county contiguous to yours and with a great transportation system that is connected, Honda can rest assured it would have access to our well-qualified labor pool. Honda already is familiar with the fine products and employees of our YSK Corporation operation."

Honda's decision on a site is expected in about a month. Other sites in consideration, as reported in the media, are Van Wert in Ohio, two sites in Indiana and maybe a site in Illinois. Honda has said the new plant will be built in the Midwest.

ALL CHILLED OUT: By the time everyone left Wednesday's Membership Luncheon, they were feeling downright mellow as Drs. Brandy and Joe Spaulding, shown taking care of a computer glitch, walked us through some exercises to help relieve stress. They also reminded us that many times we take on needless worries about the "little things" in life. Next month, the First Annual Great Seal Awards will be handed out at the July 5 luncheon at the Chillicothe Country Club. About 20 companies and individuals have been nominated.

ACCURATE MOVING NORTH: The former Art Tech signs facility on U.S. 23 at River Road at the new intersection with the Ohio 207 connector will serve as the new home for Accurate Heating and Cooling starting Monday. Former chamber Entrepreneur of the Year and owner Tom White said the move from North Bridge Street is into a place that is nearly twice the size and will allow for future growth. The Art Tech business recently was purchased by Randy Drewyor and Mike and Lana Corcoran and moved to a building just off Delano Road.

JAPANESE STEAKHOUSE ON THE WAY?: Rumor has it that the buyer of one of two available lots in front of Sam's Club on North Bridge Street plans to build a Japanese-style steakhouse. Records at the Ross County Recorder's office show the lot was purchased last Friday by New North Star Development out of Athens. The principal partner in the company is Ke Zhao.

CITY MAY LOOK TO UPDATE ZONING CODE: A special meeting of the Chillicothe Planning Commission on Wednesday, June 21 has been called to discuss making a request to City Council to hire a professional planner to propose changes in the city's zoning code which originally was written and adopted in 1975. In April, the chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee urged the commission to investigate the possibility of updating the code in light of recent disputes. At that meeting, the commission voted to ask professional planners for bids for the work.

RESTAURANT SIGNING OFF: Saturday, June 17 will be the last day for the Italian Grille as it gives up its legal battle with Darden Restaurants, owner of Red Lobster and the Olive Garden. CP Management cited the legal issues for the closing of the restaurant on North Plaza Boulevard as Darden first challenged the use of the name Italian Garden, that was changed then challenged again the signage. The restaurant first opened as New York New York.

NEWEST TEAM MEMBER: Morgan Roderick is now a mortgage loan originator with Fifth Third Bank.

VALLEY VIEW OFFERING TRAINING PROGRAM: Valley View Alzheimer’s Care Center has two upcoming training courses scheduled for anyone interested in pursuing a career as a nursing assistant. DON'T FORGET THE CHAMBER WHEN BUDGETING: Some companies actually begin their budgeting process by July each year while others wait until it's almost the new year. No matter when you do it, make sure to keep in mind the chamber and the many opportunities to market your business throughout the year:

  • Your dues: Keeping your membership active entitles you and your employees to all the benefits the chamber offers.
  • Leadership Chillicothe Ross: A great program to hone your management and leadership skills while learning all about the community's assets and jewels through tours and discussions with community leaders. The program begins in September each year.
  • Premium membership: If your company participates in many of the activities, you can actually save money and get greater exposure by committing early.
  • Annual Dinner: The premium chamber event of the year in February with more than 400 now attending.
  • Advertising: The chamber newsletter is one of the best read in the county and has great demographics while the website reaches people looking to come to Chillicothe as well as other members.
  • Expo: It was crammed last year and the new location will allow more people to check out your products or services. And since it's a Business After Business, a built-in crowd is assured.
