MAJOR EMPLOYER EXPANDS, ADDS 250 JOBS: The addition of 80,000 square feet to convert Chillicothe's Wal-Mart into a super center also means the addition of 250 jobs, according to Manager John Chlovechok. That brings Wal-Mart's employment up to 500 making it one of the largest employers in Ross County. That means more income tax dollars for the city, more property tax dollars for the schools and more sales tax income for the county not to mention Chillicothe's reign as a the regional shopping, dining and entertainment hub for south central Ohio becomes even stronger. In the photo above, many of the 38 associates who have been with the local Wal-Mart since it opened in 1996 are led in the company cheer by its Teacher of the Year, Lynda Komlos.

BIG IMPACT, BIG SHOES TO FILL: In her two and a half years, Lissa Cleary, the executive director of the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau, had a big impact on the tourism industry here. She started just in time to help coordinate the year-long celebration of the state bicentennial in 2003, make changes in processes to make the bureau more effective and was a big proponent of working with this chamber to develop today's Welcome Center on Main Street. The good part is that she remains in the community to help on projects of her choice. Persons interested in applying for the position may send a resume to the bureau via fax at 702-2727 or email at info@visithistory.com. The deadline to apply is June 10.

WELCOME CENTER OPEN ON JUNE 7: Everyone is invited to drop by the Welcome Center on Tuesday, June 7 from 5-7 p.m. to learn more about one of the area's best resources for information, especially for business and visitors. The open house will feature tours of the offices of the chamber, the visitors bureau and the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation. Food and refreshments will be served on the back lot.

ENDEAVOR CENTER ON DISPLAY: Another open house and ribbon cutting will be held Friday, June 3 at the Endeavor Center just south of Piketon. The new business incubator of the OSU South Centers features office space, equipment, conference rooms and small manufacturing spaces for start-up firms. It's a great way to save on operating costs while concentrating on growing a business. The ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Information on the center off Shyville Road off U.S. 32 east is available from Steve Shepherd at shepherd.156@osu.edu. In addition, Shepherd will be the featured speaker at the next Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, June 22. Networking Luncheon registration

MORE RIBBONS CUT: In the past week, the chamber's ceremonial scissors have gotten such a workout, we're looking to get them replaced (and with ones that will actually cut on command!). In addition to Wal-Mart, the doors to Express Personnel Services were officially opened this past week with Duane Sowers doing the honors.

TRAINING UP NEXT FOR SAFETY COUNCIL: The elements of a good training program for safety and getting employees involved in safety programs will be discussed at the next luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council. The session on Thursday, June 9 starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club. And make sure to register: Safety Council luncheon

SBA NOW OFFERING ONLINE CLASSES: Creating a business plan, customer service fundamentals and creating web pages are three of the classes now being offered by Ed2Go through the Small Business Administration and the Thomson Corp. There is no cost to enroll, but only the first 2,400 to register will be eligible. To take advantage of the courses: www.sba.gov/training.

SCHOOL CAMPAIGN WAS COMPLEX: It took five speakers, charts, a Power Point presentation and a bunch of handouts to explain how the operating levy of Chillicothe City Schools was approved by voters in the May 3 election. The five, including Superintendent Mike Trego, presented an overview of the campaign strategy at Wednesday's Networking Luncheon in which representatives from several organizations planning to be on the ballot soon were present.

TWO MORE MEMBERS OFFERING DISCOUNTS: Momento Ad Specialties and Custom Threads embroidery are offering discounts to other chamber members that are not available to the general public. They join 11 others also offering discounts on products or services which is another benefit of membership in the chamber. If you'd like to join the club, give the chamber a call at 702-2722.
