PLENTY OF TECH GOING ON: While we'll probably never be confused with the Silicon Valley, the Scioto Valley is home to some very forward-thinking people using technology in some very unique ways. Some of these ways were spotlighted at this week's Networking Luncheon which featured Garry Little of the Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio. Little talked about the organization (www.itaao.org) and gave some examples of how they try to bring people and companies together. Before his presentation, though, several firms represented in the room at the Chillicothe Country Club talked about their uses of technology:

  • Infosight's John Robertson noted his firm is working on developing a new division to handle identification of medical laboratory specimens.
  • Southern Hills Academy has teamed with Apple for a program that will see every student at the school get a laptop next school year.
  • Perfection One Collision Center has a website where you can watch the progress of your vehicle being repaired, conveniently answering everyone's question: "When are you going to be done?"
  • Technology and Services continues to innovate with technology, now having a program to measure glass without having to touch it.
  • Chaotic Collisions has developed an online program to teach human resource professionals about the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Check out photos from the luncheon: May 2005 Networking Luncheon photos

CATS TO ROCK THE STAGE: The Gravity Cats will be playing classic rock n roll and other selections to keep the crowd stirred at next Friday's (May 13) "Rockin' Ross County" fundraiser for the chamber. The event gets underway at 8 p.m. in the Elks parking lot on West Second Street (inside if the weather doesn't cooperate) with refreshments and food available. Around 9, an auction will be held for three chairs decorated by chamber members and the drawing will be held to determine the winner of the "Ultimate Vacation Package." Tickets for the vacation package are still available at the chamber. The $25 price gets you a chance at a gift certificate to Advantage Travel to use as you see fit. The prize is dependent on the number of tickets sold and could be as high as $3,000. No more than 325 tickets will be sold.

DISCOUNT PROGRAM OFF TO GREAT START: Four chamber members already are offering nice discounts on products and services to other chamber members in the new discount program. The program is available to all chamber members and is to stimulate activity among members. It also helps keep local sales dollars local. LYNYRD SKYNYRD TICKETS GO ON SALE MAY 16: The chamber and Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau will be selling tickets to the concert of classic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd when it appears at the Ross County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 11. Tickets go on sale Monday, May 16 (please don't call before May 16 to reserve tickets) at 9 a.m. here at the Welcome Center at 45 E. Main St. We'll also be selling tickets for the fair concert on Friday, Aug. 12 featuring Chris Cagle and Darryl Worley. You may buy tickets in person or by calling the chamber (on or after May 16) at 702-2722 or the visitors bureau at 702-7677. Visa and MasterCard will be accepted. Tickets for Lynyrd Skynyrd are $35 for preferred reserved, $30 for reserve and $25 for grandstand. Tickets for the Cagle-Worley concert are $20 for reserved and $15 for the grandstand. PROGRAM GOAL: MORE HOMEOWNERS: The Fifth Third Homeownership Mobile is pulling into Chillicothe Friday, May 13 with plans to educate more people about the benefits and opportunities of homeownership. The specially equipped van is a partnership of Fifth Third, Freddie Mac and the Community College Foundation. The mobile classroom offers one-to-one meetings with mortgage experts regarding pre-approvals, refinancing and the loan process. A ribbon-cutting is set for 11:30 a.m. at Sack-N-Save on East Main Street followed by lunch. The e-bus is open until 6 p.m.

CHECK YOUR PLAQUE: All members in good standing of the chamber should be displaying their 2005 membership plaque -- and we hope prominently. If for some reason, you don't have the most recent insert card, give us a call and we'll get one out right away, 702-2722.

HOME-GROWN TRADITION CONTINUES: It looks like great weather will greet the 2005 opening day of the Chillicothe Farmers' Market. Sunshine and blue skies are predicted when vendors begin selling at 8 Saturday morning at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. Produce, baked goods, natural meat and plants and flowers all will be on display. Sales end at noon each Saturday.

NO JOBS EXPECTED TO BE LOST: That's what the new owners of Telesis Technologies said this week. The 175 workers at the Pickaway County business off U.S. 23 are expected to remain under Crimson Investments of Palo Alto, CA which bought the firm from Tyden Group of Michigan. Telesis makes identification and security-marking systems for products ranging from cars to golf clubs. Customers include AT&T, Boeing, Ford, GE Aerospace, General Motors and Volvo. The new owner is quoted as saying it is interested in selling Telesis products more aggressively in Asia.

SERVICE HAS IMPACT: Herlihy Moving and Storage has been named an IMPACT Household Goods Award winner by Mayflower Transit for 2004. The award signifies Herlihy as a top performing Mayflower agent in terms of claims liability percentage. The firm will be recognized at the annual convention in November in Orlando, FL.

WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEKEND?: Wondering what to do this weekend or want to check on the next three weekends, just click on the Community events calendar link that now becomes a staple of Weekly Update. It's on the left side above the chamber calendar. This is a link to the calendar maintained by the visitors bureau and it also appears on our homepage. If you want to list one of your events, email the bureau at info@visithistory.com or call 702-7677.

SHOWING OFF YOUR PLACE: Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 7 from 5-7 p.m. to attend the open house at 45 E. Main St. The chamber, visitors bureau and the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation will be hosting an open house to give you a chance to see the Welcome Center. All major renovations have been completed and it's time to show you what your dues and other investments in the chamber have yielded. We think you'll be nicely surprised, if you haven't been here already.

LOOKING FOR BOARD MEMBERS OR VOLUNTEERS?: Don't forget about graduates of the chamber's Pathfinders Leadership program. One goal of the program, which sees the next class graduating next week, is to prepare alumni to serve on boards or volunteer their time with organizations in the community. By giving the participants broad knowledge of the community and its resources, these people are well equipped to help groups advance. To check out the alums, here's a list which will be updated by late next week: Pathfinder Leadership graduates.

ABOUT TO OPEN: The grand re-opening of the new Wal-Mart Supercenter on River Trace Lane is set for Wednesday, May 25 at 8 a.m. More details to come.
