ROAD WORK ACCELERATED: Motorists could be using the new Ohio 207 connector in less than five months and the proposed four-lane Ohio 104 by 2008. Ross County Engineer Don Carnes told the nearly 50 people who attended the Membership Luncheon Wednesday that the mild winter and aggressive schedule of the contractor means the pavement will start going down shortly on Ohio 207 and that the three-mile, $30 million road between Ohio 104 and U.S. 23 north of the city could be open in September, a few months ahead of schedule. Construction on the widening of Ohio 104 from the city limits to the new connector could start next year, he said. A paved median will allow for left-turn lanes. Carnes said of the 11 projects identified in a thoroughfare plan adopted a few years back, seven should be completed by 2008, three are no longer feasible and the 11th, the widening of Western Avenue, is under serious study by the city. USEC sponsored Wednesday’s luncheon and representatives provided an update on the American Centrifuge project in Piketon.

BUSINESSES DESERVE HONORS: The chamber is looking for a few businesses that have excelled or done good things in the community in the past year. It’s also looking for individual business people who have spent their lifetimes growing their business and accepted a role as a leader in the community. May 31 is the deadline for nominations for the awards that will be announced at the Membership Luncheon on July 5. Unlike a previous effort, the nomination effort only takes a minute or two. We only need a paragraph or two, but we’ll also accept as much information as you can provide. And you can do it anonymously, if you’d like. Nominations will go to the chamber’s Awards Committee which will select the honorees. Here is the link for you to nominate your favorite business or individual: Chamber Awards Nomination.

PETLAND OPENS LARGER STORE SATURDAY: Once the ribbon is cut Saturday morning at 9:45, customers will get a chance to explore the newly designed and larger Petland store on North Bridge Street. A month of renovations and expansion is over at what will be the flagship store for the company founded in 1967 by Ed Kunzelman. A clown, face painter and magician will entertain the kids once the store opens. Centers for Adopt-A-Pet, community service and nutrition are part of the new design as well as a boutique section. All chamber members are invited to participate in the grand re-opening activities.

OHIO GETS ANOTHER DAKOTA’S: Ground for the newest Dakota’s Roadhouse is being broken Monday at 10 a.m. on the south side of Waverly, next to the AmeriHost Inn. This will be the fourth restaurant in the group, joining the original on Western Avenue and ones in Hillsboro and Jackson. The Waverly restaurant is scheduled to open in the early Fall.

FARMERS MARKET OPENS SATURDAY: The parking lot at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue will bustle each Saturday now until late fall with the Chillicothe Farmers Market and the vendors selling local produce, flowers, baked goods and natural beef and pork. The market runs 8 a.m. until noon. For a list of vendors, check the Chillicothe Gazette on Thursdays.

CONTRACTORS SUBJECT OF COUNCIL LUNCHEON: Companies also are liable for the safety of the employees of the contractors they hire to get some work done. Ralph Oliveti from Safex Safety Consultants will lead the discussion at Thursday’s luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council at the Chillicothe Country Club. Council members are reminded they must attend at least eight luncheons to remain eligible for the 4 percent premium discount from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. The last luncheon is in June. Sign up now to attend on Thursday: Safety Council registration.

WORKFORCE ASSISTANT JOINS CHAMBER STAFF: Cari Porter, a Chillicothe High School and Ohio University graduate, joined the chamber staff this week as the workforce development assistant. She will be responsible for working with employers to maintain and improve the Job Bank page on the chamber's website. She and Workforce Development Manager Elizabeth Camponeschi coordinate activities with the Jobs One-Stop on Second Street to provide services to both employers and employees.

HEALTH FAIR AT COLLEGE: A Health, Beauty and Informational Fair is set for Thursday, May 18 in Chillicothe Tents for Events at Southeastern Business College on Western Avenue. Representatives from various local companies and organizations will provide free blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density and other tests along with massages and beauty consulting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
