County experiencing
a building boom

The city and county building departments have been kept busy the first three months of this year when you look at the value of the commercial permits they have issued versus the same first quarter a year ago. According to city records, the value of the commercial permits from January through the end of March was $6.9 million, or a 2,000 percent increase above 2005. There's also been an increase in residential building which saw $1.8 million issued this year vs. $1.3 million in 2005, a 38 percent hike. In the county (which issues only commercial permits), the value was $3.1 million this year vs. $1.6 million last year, a 94 percent increase.

CLASS PLANS TO BEAUTIFY INTERSECTION: New landscaping will adorn the western part of the Main, High and Western intersection, thanks to the chamber’s Leadership Chillicothe Ross class. The group, which graduates next month, will be working at the site Saturday, May 6 and will finish around 2 p.m. in time for a dedication ceremony. Every year, the leadership group is charged with coming up with a project that benefits the community without raising funds. This group sealed partnerships with Victoria Manor Bed & Breakfast (owners of the property), Scioto Lawn and Landscape and ROCAL to make it happen. Applications for the next leadership class are now being accepted: Leadership Chillicothe Ross application

USEC SPONSORING WEDNESDAY’S LUNCHEON: In addition to learning about new highway projects in Ross County, diners at next Wednesday’s Membership Luncheon also will hear about the progress being made at the American Centrifuge project in Pike County. USEC will take a few minutes to explain the project and where it stands and will be followed by Ross County Engineer Don Carnes who will give the road report. Sign up now for the luncheon that begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club: Membership Luncheon.

USEC PLANS TO BE SUPPLIER OF CHOICE: With about a dozen applications expected for new nuclear power plants in the U.S. in the next two years, more than two dozen plants under construction in the world now and 40 in the planning stages, USEC plans to ensure there is enough fuel for all of them. “The U.S. nuclear industry needs the assurance of a domestic enrichment capacity, and USEC will be there to provide it,” said CEO John Welch at the company’s annual shareholder meeting this week. “In return, USEC needs the assurance of a stable market so that we can recoup our substantial investment in new centrifuge technology.” The Piketon plant is expected to be fully operational in 2010 and have about 500 employees.

PACCAR RECORDS RECORD NUMBERS: The parent company of the Kenworth Truck Company posted record quarterly revenues of $3.85 billion and record quarterly net income of $342 million in the first quarter this year. It also rewarded shareholders with a 20 percent increase in the quarterly dividend to 30 cents. The local plant is now turning out about 100 trucks a day and has about 1,700 employees.

TAX DOLLARS BEING STRETCHED: Thanks to the increase in interest rates, the county government is on track to earn nearly $1 million on its investments this year which would easily surpass the $750,000 that was budgeted. Treasurer Jerry Byers credited the increase to the higher interest rates and improvements in the way the funds are invested, thanks to cooperation with local banks.

TRADITIONS EMPLOYEE WINS AWARD: Carol Bland was chosen from more than 600 nominations to win the 2005 Employee of the Year award from National Church Residences. The honor goes to one non-management employee for their devotion to service and strong work ethic. Bland has been with Traditions of Chillicothe since 2002. Bland, Melissa Baker, Angel Chester, Judy Corbean and Chris Maynard of Traditions all received the STAR award from the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes for the Aging.

OU-C OFFERING SEMINAR TO NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS: Adults looking to begin furthering their education or those wishing to go back to work are invited to a seminar at Ohio University-Chillicothe on Wednesday (May 3) or Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Topics to be covered include finances, managing college, family and work and career options.
