SAFETY CHIEF ON HAND FOR CEREMONIES: James Conrad, CEO of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation presented the certificates to the winners at Thursday's Awards Luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council. In his remarks, Conrad noted that lost-time injuries in the county had declined 20 percent from the previous year and he attributed part of the decrease to companies joining the safety council and taking safety seriously. He also announced the incentive program for companies to join and participate in safety councils was being doubled in the next fiscal year to 4 percent. The discount is on premiums paid by firms to BWC. The big winners at the luncheon were five firms which have experienced more than 500,000 hours and six months without a lost-time accident. They were:

  • American Electric Power: 776,485 injury-free hours and 1,415 injury-free days.

  • Citizens National Bank: 1,441,323 hours and 618 days.

  • Family Healthcare: 564,320 hours and 2,258 days.

  • Rocal: 832,745 hours and 328 days.

  • YSK: 595,715 hours and 424 days.

LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON NEXT WEEK: Just a reminder to those who've signed up that the luncheon with local legislators is next Friday, April 15. It had to be moved from this week because of conflicts. And there's still time to sign up: Legislative Luncheon Registration. Results of the chamber survey on tax reform will be announced next week also.

NO SMOKING BAN ON THE WAY?: Apparently Chillicothe City Council is considering banning smoking in all restaurants within the city limits. The committee considering the legislation has a public meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in council chambers on South Paint Street just before the regular council meeting.

HELPING ENVIRONMENT AND FARMERS: Petron Oil will begin offering soy biodiesel fuel on Saturday. The blend of soy oil and diesel will be available at Petron's Massieville Convenience Store on U.S. 23 following a grand opening at 11 a.m. Jim Doersam of Petron reports the fuel is cleaner burning and extends a diesel engine's life without any modifications. This will be the first location in southern Ohio to offer the fuel that helps support the local farming community.

TICKETS NOW ON SALE: On May 13 at 9 p.m. at the chamber's "Rockin Ross County" event at the Elks, one lucky winner will get up to $3,000 toward an "Ultimate Vacation" package.
