MUCH MORE THAN AN EXPANSION: The effects of the nearly $20 million expansion of the Adena Regional Medical Center campus announced this week will go well beyond just the numbers in the news release. This is an economic development achievement on a major scale, maybe more than if a 150-employee new manufacturing facility were being announced. Some considerations:

  • The new Adena Health Pavilion to be built north of the present Medical Office Building will mean more doctors, more nurses, more assistants, more housekeeping staff and other jobs. When completed and occupied by this time next year, the result could mean Adena becomes the top employer in the county. With about 1,500 full-time equivalent employees now, the expansion could push Adena to more than 1,700, the same as Kenworth and MeadWestvaco (NewPage).
  • It most probably will mean even more people from surrounding counties will come to Adena for services. They more than likely will remain a few hours longer to shop in our stores, eat in our restaurants and maybe stay in our motels more often.
  • With even more people coming to take advantage of our great health care resources, even more entrepreneurs could take advantage of the situation, creating more jobs and increasing the tax base.

So, the effects of such an expansion reach well into the community as a whole, making it stronger and making it more attractive for new business and making it more attractive for our young people to return home to work and raise a family. And on the heels of this expansion will come another one in 2006 that will see the Emergency Department enlarged, inpatient rooms improved and a state-of-the-art Maternity Center. Everyone is invited to the 3:15 groundbreaking Sunday for the new pavilion.

STRONGER SCHOOLS ADD TO THE EQUATION: Good communities support their schools by helping provide good facilities, good teachers and great experiences that inspire students to learn all along the way. The business segment of the community has a very vested interest in having strong schools and that's one reason the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted last week to endorse passage of the operating levy for city schools on the May 3 ballot. And to further help ensure passage, another meeting of the business community is Tuesday (April 5) at 5:30 at the CHS Alumni Library.

LOCAL CONTRACTORS SOUGHT FOR SCHOOL PROJECT: Construction will begin later this year on the multi-million dollar addition and renovation at the high school and local contractors and vendors have a chance to see how they might benefit. A forum for contractors and vendors, including a tour of the project site and potential bidding opportunities, is set for Friday, April 15 from 9-11 a.m. at the district office at 235 Cherry St. More information is available from the Superintendent Michael Trego at 775-4250.

MANAGER TO BE INTRODUCED AT PAINTS PARTY: Glenn Wilson, the new field skipper for the Chillicothe Paints, will be welcomed when Budweiser presents the preseason Party with the Paints on Friday, April 15. In addition to meeting the new managers, fans also will get a chance to see "Touching Home -- Baseball in the Bushes" movie documentary about southern Ohio baseball since 1874, including the history of the Paints, and introduction of Mike Shannon's new book, "Baseball in Chillicothe" that has more than 200 photos. The event starts at 7:05 p.m. at Horizon Technology and costs $20 which includes a Wilson baseball card. Tickets are available at the Paints Gift Shop downtown at Second and Paint streets or by calling 773-8326.
