New era begins in city's paper-making tradition

Glatfelter welcomed to the community

The century-old tradition of Chillicothe as a paper-making town continues under new leadership this weekend as the P.H. Glatfelter Company assumes ownership of much of the assets of the local Mead-MeadWestvaco-NewPage operations. Signs announcing the change are going up all around the mill on the south side of the city and employees are expected to get the formal welcome in sessions with Glatfelter leaders Monday. The new era will mean a return to production of grades of paper not made here in recent years, such as for books and texts. Tests are being run on once-idled machines providing an added optimism in the future of the community. From all chamber members, we extend our sincere thanks and best wishes for continued success to the Glatfelter folks. Welcome!

PROVIDE YOUR OWN WELCOME: You also can welcome the Glatfelter crew by using your outside signs and marquees with special messages.

NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR PETLAND EXPANDING: “This remodel and expansion project will make Petland Chillicothe our flagship store,” said Frank Difatta, president of Petland Inc. of the store off North Bridge Street. “People from all over the world come to the Chillicothe Petland store to participate in training seminars. With final dimensions of 8,750 square feet, this newly expanded store will be able to better accommodate larger groups of people – our local customers and our worldwide franchisees, who are in training.” To make way for the project, the store will close Sunday and re-open on May 6. When completed, the store will have a different color scheme, a larger, glass-enclosed kennel-play area, “socialization” rooms for customers to get acquainted with their pets, an area for birthday and other types of parties, a Nutrition Center, a water garden and an Adopt-A-Pet center. Petland, now in its 39th year, has 175 pet centers in the U.S., Canada, Japan, France, Chile and South Africa.

SAFETY INCENTIVE PROGRAM TO CONTINUE: For at least one more year, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation plans to continue the 4-percent premium discount program for companies participating in the Ross County Safety Council. More than 90 companies are taking advantage of the program this year which ends June 30. “BWC clearly views the safety council incentive program as an investment in the safety and health of Ohio’s workforce,” said Administrator and CEO Bill Mabe who will be the guest speaker at the council’s awards luncheon on Thursday, April 13. More than 50 members will receive awards. To sign up for the luncheon and to learn more about the incentive program: Ross County Safety Council
