Host a board meeting

Want to promote your company's new product or service or just want to make decision-makers more aware of your accomplishments? Think about hosting a chamber board meeting. You'll get 15-20 minutes to talk about your firm to the 20 members of the board or maybe even give them a tour of your facilities. It's a great way to get more recognition. All for the cost of just buying them lunch. For details, call 702-2722.

BY THE NUMBERS: Every once in awhile, it's good to sift through some data to get a better picture of what's really happening in the Ross County business world. Unfortunately the most recent numbers on business trends from the U.S. Census Bureau date to 2002, but they still reveal some interesting facts and probably haven't changed significantly:

  • There were 1,352 establishments in the county in 2002.
  • 51 percent had four or fewer employees and 72 percent had fewer than 10 employees.
  • Only 4 had more than 1,000 employees (presumably MeadWestvaco, Kenworth, Adena Regional Medical Center and the VA Medical Center).
  • 19 percent of the total were retail businesses, the largest category in the county.
  • Tied for second on the list were construction firms and health care and social assistance firms at 11 percent.
  • Only 3 percent were in manufacturing.

CITY SCHOOL LEVY SUPPORT GROWING: About 20 business people attended the meeting this week designed to determine how best this segment could aid in the passage of the operating levy sought by Chillicothe City Schools in the May 3 election. Bob Smith of E.M. Smith Jewelers chaired the meeting in which information and ideas were gathered. The chamber board formally endorsed passage of the levy in its meeting Thursday. A second meeting of the business group is set for Tuesday, April 5 at 5:30 at the Alumni Library.

SCHOOL FUNDING TWIST: Our local state lawmakers have plenty to talk about at the Friday, April 8 Legislative Luncheon, but another possibility arose this week. Some suburban lawmakers have gotten together and said they are hoping to pump more money into the state budget for schools and give districts more potential funding avenues. According to the Columbus Dispatch, this group is looking at allowing districts to go ask voters for a sales tax and allow property taxes to grow as values increase, within limits. This along with the huge overhaul proposed in the business tax arena will give state Sen. John Carey, states Reps. John Schlichter and Clyde Evans good fodder for discussion. The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club and reservations are filling up fast: Legislative Luncheon Registration

NETWORKING LUNCHEONS RETURN: By popular demand, the monthly Networking Luncheons return on April 27. Designed mostly for small and micro businesses, the luncheons will feature guest speakers geared to the audience. And, each company represented will get 30 seconds for an infomercial to introduce themselves and or their product/service to the others. The speaker for April is Gary Little of the Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio. It starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chillicothe Country Club. Networking Luncheon registration

OPEN HOUSE TO REVIEW HIGHWAY PLAN: District 9 of the Ohio Department of Transportation is holding an open house to review and gather public comment on projects planned for the area in 2006-2009. The open house is Monday, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. No pre-registration is required.

HOME AND GARDEN SHOW NEARS: Many chamber members will be involved as always in the Southern Ohio Home and Garden Show April 2-3 at the Ross County Fairgrounds. The show starts at 10 a.m. both days and ends at 6 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. Admission is free and parking is $2. For all the details: www.southernohiohomegarden.com.

DRAMA LAUNCHES NEW AFFINITY PROGRAM: Area businesses have a chance to take advantage of the drawing power of "Tecumseh!" this year through a new sponsorship program being launched. Each performance is available for an exclusive sponsorship and all sponsors will be included in the souvenir program and acknowledgement on a sign in the pavilion area. The levels of sponsorship range from $3,000 to $250 and all include complimentary tickets. To sign up, call the office at 775-4100 or email Marion Waggoner at mnw@horizonview.net or Beth Beatty at tecumseh@bright.net.
