HARD
HATS AND ORANGE BARRELS ABOUND:
In his State of the City
Address Wednesday before a chamber-sponsored crowd, Chillicothe Mayor Joe
Sulzer said, “I firmly believe Chillicothe’s best days are ahead of us.” He
gave a review of the city’s important activities in 2005, including coping
with the tragic loss of police officer Larry Cox, and he also talked of the
challenges ahead. He also noted the huge increase in 2005 in the value of
commercial building permits issued. And when one looks around the entire
county, it’s hard to discount the activity that’s making for good
construction jobs to be followed by permanent jobs. Here’s a sampling:
-
Sam’s Club: An early fall opening is scheduled for the huge store going
up on North Bridge Street. The wholesale house helps solidify
Chillicothe as a regional shopping, dining and entertainment hub.
-
Adena Health System: The new medical building is in its final
construction stages and soon will be filled with new doctors, nurses,
technicians and support staff.
-
Traditions of Chillicothe: The new Alzheimer’s unit, assisted living
quarters and therapy rooms off Western Avenue mean about 60 more medical
jobs for the community.
-
Chillicothe schools: A news release this week said the new high school
portion will be ready by Aug. 10, about a month before students start
back to school on Yoctangee Parkway. Work on the new middle school
portion starts June 5 this year and will be done for those students in
time for the 2007-2008 school year. The school is in need of a moving
company to help get furniture and equipment out and a place to store the
stuff. Call Joyce Atwood at 775-4250, Ext. 104.
-
Valley Fresh IGA: Terry DeGarmo has contracted with Sunrush Construction
to finish his new full-line grocery and gas station on the east edge of
Bainbridge. After months of delays, “We’re moving,” said DeGarmo of the
14,000 square foot store that will compliment his IGA in Frankfort.
-
Sunrush Enterprises: Steve Houseman and his partners broke ground on the
third commercial building on Western Avenue in the area of Dakota’s
Restaurant. This one will have six units and a total of 9,000 square
feet.
-
CVS: Across from Pawnee Road on North Bridge Street, the pharmacy has
broken ground. Hopefully, traffic will be able to use that signal soon.
-
Herrnstein Hyundai: Announced last week before the BAB, the new
dealership will be going in just north of the new Ohio 207 connector
south of Art Tech, creating at least 20 new jobs.
-
Kroger on North Bridge Street has a $750,000 interior renovation planned
to modernize its store.
-
Unioto: New bleachers and a press box for the home side of the Shermans’
football field is predicted to cost $493,000 and will make watching the
Tanks much more enjoyable this coming season.
THE
ORANGE BARRELS PORTION:
And while there is all of that construction, the Ohio Department of
Transportation has an ambitious schedule for this year in Ross County that
will impact nearly all motorists. In addition to the Ohio 207 connector from
Ohio 104 to U.S. 23 that might be open as early as October, here is what
else is on ODOT’s plate:
-
U.S. 35: Resurfacing of all four lanes from about the
Bridge Street interchange to a mile or so past the County Road 550
interchange near Pleasant Valley. This also is to include an eastbound
on-ramp-only near Larrick Lane and a westbound off-ramp-only to Sandusky
Drive near Unioto schools. It’s scheduled to start in April and not be
done until June 2007.
-
Ohio 104: Resurfacing of both lanes all the way from
Chillicothe north to the Pickaway County line, starting in June and done
by the end of October.
-
County Road 550: Resurfacing of about 11 miles in two stretches,
starting in June and done by Nov. 1.
-
Bridge Street: Widening to construct left-turn lanes both north- and
southbound at Water Street. Not scheduled to start until November and be
done by June 2007.

ADDRESS ON THE WEB:

KENWORTH UNVEILS REPLACEMENT MODEL:
At the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville this week, Paccar unveiled
its new T660 Class 8 vehicle which will replace the T600 model. The
replacement model has enhanced aerodynamics and fuel economy, modern
styling, forward-lighting technology and an energy system that will allow
truckers to keep the engines warm without having to idle them at truck and
rest stops. The new Halogen lamps provide 40 percent light down the road.
The Chillicothe plant will be building them. In other Paccar news of the
week, Vice President Bob Christensen said there is no evidence buyers are
rushing to place orders ahead of new emissions standards going into effect
in January. That might mean no decrease in production in 2007 as some stock
analysts had feared.
MORE
THAN 50 TO RECEIVE SAFETY AWARDS:
William Mabe, the administrator and CEO for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’
Compensation, will be shaking a lot of hands come Thursday, April 13 when he
hands out the awards to members of the Ross County Safety Council at the
annual recognition luncheon. Awards are going to members that had no
lost-time accidents in 2005, that improved their record from the year before
and that were leaders in their industry group. Two will receive special
awards. Mabe is the main speaker at the event at the Chillicothe Country
Club.
Safety luncheon reservations.
CLUB OFFERING CARRYOUT BOX LUNCHES:
Nine different sandwiches are available from Chef Sean Immell at the
Chillicothe Country Club in the form of box lunches. They are similar to
what he offered at his former Sunnybrook Deli. Each comes with a choice of
side dish, pickle spear, cookie and drink for $7.95. Order at least one hour
ahead of time for orders of less than 10. Ten or more should be ordered at
least 24 hours in advance and can be delivered. Club phone: 775-0150.
COMPRESSORS NOW PART OF PRODUCT LINE:
Advanced Services now is offering Ingersoll Rand air compressors, parts and
services. “The fit was perfect,” said Dave Pinkerton. “We were already
servicing the factories, plants, garages and other industrial sites” and
they were calling out of town companies to do their air compressor work.
Advanced is the only authorized Ingersoll Rand service company in seven
counties.

Committee’s program.
PRIME WAYS TO PROMOTE
YOUR BUSINESS:
Your chamber has a variety of ways for you to introduce your company, a new
product, a new service or just to re-acquaint people with you. And the price
can be just right. Consider:
-
Sponsoring and/or speaking at one of the new Membership Luncheons now
being held monthly. The cost is $100 plus a door prize with a value of
at least $25. In return, the sponsor receives their company’s name
during promotion of the event in this newsletter and on the chamber
website, exclusive right to place brochures and promotional materials on
the tables (others will be using a shared table), two free tickets to
the event and the choice of either a three-minute “sales pitch” or
provide the speaker (20-25 minutes and no sales pitch). Luncheons are
held the first Wednesday of each month at the Chillicothe Country Club.
-
Host a Business After Business: Only four months (January, February,
March and December) are left for 2007 and none the rest of this year for
companies wanting to host a BAB which requires providing food and
beverages. If you don’t have a place big enough for the 100-200 who
attend, consider partnering with another chamber member company or
organization.
-
Host a board meeting: The 22 directors and two staff people love to eat
before the monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday each month. Buying us
lunch gives you a chance to talk about your business or organization for
five minutes in front of some very influential people. And if you don’t
have the site, we’ll find that as long as you’re buying lunch.
-
Broadcast your message – exclusively: For only $50 you can reach all
700-plus on our email newsletter distribution list with your own message
of about 100 words or less and maybe a graphic. You write the message
(or we can help), you decide when it goes out and we have no doubts
you’ll get results. And at only 7 cents per exposure, it’s a great
investment.
Call us at 702-2722 or
email us at
ccinfo@chillicotheohio.com to reserve your time or to get more details
on any of these offers.
