PROGRESS CONTINUES DOWN AT ‘THE GLAT’: All the work it takes to dot the Is and cross the Ts continues between NewPage and Glatfelter as a new era is set to begin at the local paper mill. Officials are hoping for a March 31 closing date for the sale which means work can begin very soon to bring new – or former – production lines to Chillicothe, such as paper for books and magazines in addition to the carbonless paper which is the current mainstay. When the sale is complete, our mill will represent nearly 45 percent of the annual sales of Glatfelter and almost 50 percent of its workforce, so there’s no doubt plenty of corporate attention in the future will be paid to Chillicothe’s equipment and workers which hasn’t always been the case the past five or so years. NewPage will still have a presence here as the 164 employees and machinery in the converting center/warehouse on Ohio 159 across from the medical center remains under its control. The announcement of the sale the same day as the chamber’s Annual Dinner gave Lee Bendtsen, a NewPage manager and chamber board member, a chance to talk about the announcement to the 320 on hand in OU-C’s Shoemaker Center. Bendtsen has noted that one day the mill might shed its “The Mead” tag to become “The Glat.” Long-term planning for the facility is in the works, according to CEO George Glatfelter II.

MAYOR TO DETAIL STATE OF CITY: Future plans for the city will be outlined by Mayor Joe Sulzer in his annual State of the City address to be given at a chamber-sponsored luncheon on Wednesday, March 22. The mayor and his department heads will be on hand at the event at the Chillicothe Country Club that begins at 11:30 a.m. A Q-and-A session will follow the address. The cost is $12. Make reservations now: State of City luncheon.

USEC’S NEW CHIEF AT PLANT: John Welch introduced himself to the community earlier this week at a reception at the OSU Endeavor Center in Piketon. The new CEO of USEC also toured the plant and met with managers and employees. During his visit, he acknowledged the support of Blaine Beekman of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce for its support in the licensing process for the American Centrifuge project. In other USEC news, the main entrance to the facility starting Monday will be off U.S. 32 and Shyville Road and not off U.S. 23. New bridges on the U.S. 23 cloverleaf are being built with a completion date this fall.

KROGER GETTING NEW LOOK: The interior of the Kroger grocery on North Bridge Street is undergoing major changes, according to a building permit obtained from the city. The cost of the remodeling is pegged at $750,000.

HERRNSTEIN’S PREPARES FOR BAB: The next Business After Business is set for Wednesday, March 15 at Herrnstein Chrysler on Marietta Road. Co-sponsors are RG Properties, DE Huddleston and Classic Brands. The usual fare of appetizers and beverages is planned. It’s not too soon to sign up to attend: BAB reservations.

GARDNERS SOUGHT FOR ADENA SCHOLARSHIP: The Herrnstein Family and dealership again this year is making available a scholarship that will pay expenses to attend the Historic Landscape Institute presented by the University of Virginia and nearby Monticello. In return for the scholarship, the recipient is expected to volunteer for 80 hours during the summer at the Adena Mansion and Gardens.  Details and applications are available at the dealership.

MUSEUM HAS FIVE NEW EXHIBITS: “Getting There – 100 Years of Transportation in Ross County” is the largest of five new exhibits opening Saturday at the Ross County Heritage Center on West Fifth Street. An HO-scale diorama depicts Chillicothe’s east side during its heyday as a railroad center in the 1920s and 30s. Other new exhibits are a display of Civil War artifacts and photos, an exhibit of naval scenes and landscapes painted by Civil War Admiral Henry Walke and an exhibit of rare books. The Grand Opening event is 1-5 p.m. at the center and is part of the Statehood Day celebration.

APARTMENT AVAILABLE: One of the two-bedroom apartments above the chamber office is available. The rent is $450 per month with a deposit of $250. Call the chamber office at 702-2722 to schedule a time to check it out.

SPONSOR AN EGG: Actually, you can sponsor 8,000 if you’d like. That’s how many Easter eggs will be filled by We Be Clowns for the annual hunt by kids ages 2-12 in Yoctangee Park on Saturday, April 15. Gift certificates and money both are accepted. If interested, contact Tina “Bubbles” Fore or Cindy “Pockets” Ford at 773-3789.

Local individuals winning awards were Robin Vogel at the Chillicothe branch and Brittney Walden at the Super Kmart branch. The bank has 35 offices and 250 employees.
