The Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce has developed a calculator that will allow you to determine the potential impact of Gov. Bob Taft's proposed tax reform package. Go to www.gccc.com and find your way to the calculator. You'll need to input your figures and then the impact will be posted. This takes into account the replacement of the corporate franchise tax with a tax on gross receipts above $1 million. We would be interested in knowing the impact on your business, if you use the calculator. CHANCE TO AIR YOUR OPINION: And if the tax reform plan has hit your hot buttons, you'll have a chance on Friday, April 8 to let your legislators know. Both Sen. John Carey and Rep. John Schlichter are confirmed for a chamber Legislative Luncheon. Mark it on your calendars. More details to come. CELEBRATION TIME: A ceremony was held Wednesday by Ohio University-Chillicothe marking the successful close of its Bicentennial Campaign. The goal of $5 million was easily topped with a total recorded of $6.9 million. Major donations included the scholarship endowments by Larry and Mary Gates and the property donation by Charles Black on U.S. 50 east of the city. The local campaign was part of the overall campus push for its 200th anniversary.
SPEAKER CALLS AREA A MECCA: Jack Schultz, the speaker at the chamber's Annual Meeting last week, calls the area a "Mecca for entrepreneurs" in his daily blog that's posted on the internet. He was genuinely interested in the community during a 1.5-hour tour before his presentation at the meeting. As he mentioned, he plans a follow-up book to "Boomtown USA" and these visits and talks are part of his research. He also is hoping to write a weekly newspaper column on economic development in small towns, his expertise. To read the two blog items on Chillicothe, here's the link: http://boomtownusa.blogspot.com. CORRECTION ON ADDRESS: In your chamber directories, the email address for Central Center Hardware is incorrect. Please note the correct address: cchdwe@bright.net. COLUMBUS MAYOR TO BE SPEAKER: Michael Coleman, mayor of Columbus and an announced Democratic candidate for governor, will be the keynote speaker Saturday, March 5 for the annual First Capital Statehood Day Prayer Breakfast. Tickets are $7 and are available by calling Carolyn Ault at 773-3461 or Pastor Randy O'Donnell at 773-1044. The breakfast is sponsored by the Chillicothe Kiwanis Club and the Ross County Ministerial Association. BENEFIT GETS A BOOST: At the left is a link to chamber partner's Certifichecks website where you can order gift certificates that are good at more than 100 member businesses. The certificates -- great for giving as employee rewards or birthdays and anniversaries -- now have another special feature: no expiration date. When you visit the site, you have access to those businesses which honor them. And if your business wants to become involved, you'll find a link or phone number there also. In the quarter ending Dec. 31, 676 of the certificates worth $11,000 were sold. NEWEST MEMBERS: Joining the chamber recently are:
GET YOUR BUSINESS ON BOARD: The Junior Civic League is reporting brisk sales already for its newest fund-raising project: "Chillicothe-opoly." Just like the board game with a similar name, the game features ads for local businesses and individuals. Prices range from $50 to specially featured ads for $600. The deadline to submit an ad is March 7. If interested, call 703-8740. LIBRARY PROGRAMS: In celebration of Black History Month, the Chillicothe & Ross County Public Library is hosting musical artist Arnett Howard in a free concert at 7 p.m. Monday at the former Central School on West Fifth Street. APOLOGIES TO ENTREPRENEUR: More than a year ago, the chamber attempted to compile the list of all former Entrepreneurs of the Year. We thought we had them all, but alas, we discovered a major omission last week: Chris Hanners, owner of the Chillicothe Paints was honored in 1994. Our apologies to Chris as his name is now added to what we hope is a complete listing: Entrepreneurs of Year VENDORS LICENSES: Here's who's received licenses recently from the Ross County Auditor:
BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS GET DETAILS: The three-hour sessions being conducted by the OSU Small Business Development Center at the chamber the past two months have been well attended with an average 10 per session. The free seminars provide would-be new business people with the basics on starting a new enterprise. Individual follow-up sessions can then be scheduled. Only two more dates remain: March 16 and March 30. To register: call Christie Welch at 800-860-7232 or email her at welch.183@osu.edu.MANUFACTURING SERIES ON GROWTH: A simulcast event on "Overcoming Organic Growth Constraints: Making Mergers, Acquisitions and Licensing Work for You" is set for Thursday March 10 at the OSU South Centers in Piketon. The event is by TechSolve and runs 8-11 a.m. with a continental breakfast. Email Jerry Driggs at driggs.8@osu.edu to reserve a spot or call 740-289-2071.
