RESEARCH DECISION SAD NEWS, BUT NOT UNEXPECTED: The loss of the folks at the MeadWestvaco Research facility on Eighth Street is a blow to the community, but one that has been expected for months. The decision by the company to consolidate its R&D operations in Raleigh, NC was in the works for more than a year as well as the move of corporate headquarters from Stamford, CT to Richmond, VA. Some of the 50 folks at research will make the move while others will be looking for new positions locally. And once a decision has been made about the local NewPage operations, then the research building's future will come more into focus.

DONATIONS WILL GET THEM BACK ON THEIR FEET: The employees of Goodwill Industries will stay busy if you clean your closets and "junk" rooms now and get the materials to the store on North Bridge Street or the workshop off East Second Street. The fire this week that destroyed the organization's warehouse wiped out many of the donated materials that keep the workshop and store employees busy. The photo at left was supplied by member John Taylor.

ABSOLUTE LAST CALL: Monday morning at 9 is the drop-dead hour for you to make a reservation for the Annual Dinner. More than 310 plan to be at Shoemaker Center at Ohio University-Chillicothe on Wednesday, Feb. 22 when the chamber celebrates the accomplishments of 2005 and looks forward to the rest of 2006. Tickets were mailed earlier this week, so if you haven't received them by Monday, give us a call. Those making late reservations can pick up tickets at the chamber office. And just to make sure we get your reservations, the online registration form is being disabled so you'll need to call 702-2722. The social hour begins at 6 with a cash bar, followed by dinner at 7 and then the program. Parking is encouraged on the upper level.

NO DEADLINE FOR SEMINAR: Because we think some people will be excited when they hear guest speaker Steven Little for 40 minutes at the Annual Dinner Wednesday evening, those who didn't register in advance for his four-hour "Ready, Set, GROW" seminar will be able to pay at the door on Thursday morning. The senior consultant with Inc. magazine started, grew and then sold three businesses, including one with significant e-commerce. He plans to share his "rules" for growing small businesses at the event being held in the auditorium in the lower level of Bennett Hall at OU-C. A "power networking breakfast" starts at 8 with the seminar kicking off at 9.

AN OU-C TRIFECTA: The local campus of the university got some things rolling this week when it hosted the Business After Business on the upper level at Shoemaker Center. About 125 got a chance to check out the new Hilltop Cafe that will open to the public and students for good in a week or two and which will feature Starbucks products. The new training/meeting rooms also were on display. In the photo, Patty Griffith of OU-C hands a door prize to Henry Thrapp of G&J Pepsi. Next month, the BAB moves to Herrnstein Chrysler on March 15. Images from Wednesday's BAB

MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEONS START IN APRIL: The first Wednesday of each month will feature a new Membership Luncheon of the chamber that will give members a chance to meet the newest members, a chance to sponsor the event, to supply speakers, to learn more about chamber benefits, win door prizes and take part in a local business trivia contest. The newly named Membership and Events Committee (formerly Networking) divided the months and members will be responsible for landing the sponsor and speaker. For $100, the sponsors get a chance to place their literature at all the tables and get three minutes to talk about their business or organization as well as have their name associated with the luncheon as it is promoted on the chamber website and in this newsletter. Plans are being made now for the first luncheon on April 5. Stay tuned for details. If you're interested in being a sponsor, email us at ccinfo@chillicotheohio.com.

LOOKING FOR HEROES: The First Capital District Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for nominees to honor at its Annual Heroes Breakfast on March 30. Nominations can be made in several categories, such as public safety, education, health care, etc. Forms are available by calling the Red Cross office at 772-2014. The deadline for entries is March 3. Sponsors for the breakfast also are being sought.

KENWORTH PARENT WINS AWARD: Paccar Chief Executive Mark Pigott was at the White House this week to receive on behalf of the company the National Medal of Technology. The award was created by Congress in 1980 and is administered by the Commerce Department to recognize "those who have made lasting contributions to America's competitiveness, standard of living and quality of life through technological innovation." The award was for innovations the company made to improve fuel efficiency and freight haulers' productivity.

On March 9, the Ross County Sheriff's Office will share with the group what it's doing to combat illegal methamphetamine traffic. Safety luncheon reservations.
