BUREAU INNOVATING TO BRING VISITORS HERE: More than 600 tour operators have a real incentive to bring their bus groups to Chillicothe this spring and summer. A million readers of Sunday newspaper Travel sections will see ads for Chillicothe and Ross County every week for one full year. Future visitors will need to make only one call to book packages that will include lodging, attractions and restaurants. Kyrsten Vogel and Jane Bost of the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau are pulling together what might be the bureau’s most comprehensive marketing push in its history. Some of the details:

  • Tour group operators will receive a $300 subsidy if they bring their buses to Chillicothe, spend at least one night in a local motel and make a stop at one of our major attractions. The subsidy is to help offset the increase in diesel fuel prices.

  • One company will place newspaper ads in 19 cities in Ohio and contiguous states. The Travel section ads can be changed each week to highlight festivals and events as well as attractions.

  • A couple planning to visit Chillicothe soon will be able to call the bureau and make a reservation at a participating motel or bed and breakfast, reserve tickets for “Tecumseh!”, Adena and/or the Paints and get a voucher to eat at a local restaurant. The couple gets to make all the selections from the many choices that will be available.

The bureau’s 2006 Visitor and Community Guides have just arrived and are available by dropping by the Welcome Center at 45 E. Main St.

PREPARE TO BE ENTERTAINED: Steven Little will be inspirational, animated and informational. Guaranteed. The guest speaker at this year’s Annual Dinner of the chamber started, built and sold three companies, he’s an associate editor for Inc. magazine and he’s on the road constantly helping other companies grow their businesses. More than 25 companies have made early reservations for the dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Shoemaker Center at Ohio University-Chillicothe. Now’s the time to make yours:  Annual Dinner reservations On Wednesday night, Little will provide a preview of his message. Thursday morning, you’ll get the rest of the story and more tips on how to increase profits and sales: Steven Little seminar

WAITING ROOM READING: If you want your waiting room area to offer always timely reading material, think about having several copies of the chamber’s Membership Directory and Buyers Guide handy as well as the visitors bureau guide. You’ll be giving a boost to your fellow chamber members as well as reminding your customers/patients of the many things to do in Chillicothe and Ross County. If they take them with them, all the better. For a supply or to re-stock, just give us a call at 702-2722 or email us at ccinfo@chillicotheohio.com. We’ll deliver.

CARLISLE FUTURE STILL MUDDLED: Recent letters to the editor and columns in the Chillicothe Gazette continue to pound on the potential future of the Carlisle Building at Paint and Main streets. KG&R Development, the current owners, obviously have no plans for renovations. Some other developers have explored buying and renovating it, but nothing definite is on the immediate horizon. Law Director Toni Eddy has all of the information concerning possible legal action and is studying a potential course the city might take.

SERVICE TO INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED: Frank Hirsch recently was honored by the Ohio Fruit Growers Society with its Distinguished Service Award. The Hirsch Fruit Farm icon and county commissioner was honored for his work as past president and board member of the society as well as his contributions to the fruit industry and agriculture in general.

PROUD PARENTS: Garry Mick, assistant plant manager at the Kenworth Truck Co., and his wife Sara not only are getting a visit from their daughter Amy Welch, but they also get a chance to watch her sign her new book, “Bodies We’ve Buried: Inside the National Forensic Academy, the World’s Top CSI Training School.” She’s at Book World at 16 W. Water St. Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. She is with the academy at the University of Tennessee.

WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS HAVE WEBSITE: The Small Business Administration has launched “My Biz,” a new online tool designed to provide comprehensive business information and assistance to women entrepreneurs. Check it out at www.sba.gov/women.

CONFERENCE ROOM ENLARGED: The Welcome Center’s conference room expansion is nearly complete. The room, available to all chamber members, will comfortably seat 16 and will handle upwards of 22. The wall between the former conference room and the rear office was removed. A dividing door will allow two smaller meetings at the same time. The construction is being done by Dean DiFrango. If you’d like to schedule a meeting, just give us a call at 702-2722 or email us at ccinfo@chillicotheohio.com.

TIRE SHREDDER ON WAY?: A tire shredding firm that would employ up to seven people might be coming to a portion of the former WearEver plant on Eastern Avenue. A couple of unnamed local people are seeking help from the city in the form of a $350,000 grant to help buy the equipment. The grant would be from a state agency and is competitive in nature.

FLAGET PLANS ACTIVITIES: Family Night, a Student Talent Show and recognition of distinguished alumni all are planned by Bishop Flaget School as part of Catholic Schools Week that runs Sunday through next Friday, Feb. 3. Check the full schedule at www.bishopflaget.org.
