EVERY REASON TO REMAIN UPBEAT: This week's announcement of the spin-off by MeadWestvaco of the Papers Division that includes the Chillicothe mills was naturally met by skepticism and worry by many. But early indications are that at the very least, this division, with the shots being called in Dayton by people very familiar with our local operations, will be given a solid chance to grow and focus on what it does best -- make high-quality paper for carbonless applications as well as coated papers and conversion to sheeted papers. And with community leaders dedicated to helping in any way possible, the prospects are even brighter.

NEW BUSINESS ACTIVITY BODES WELL: As evidenced by the photos at the top of the page, chamber board members and staff have been busy arranging and conducting a few ribbon cuttings to welcome new members and get their businesses off to a good start. To check out larger photos from the ceremonies, check out this link: Ribbon cutting photos.

  • Portabellas Italian restaurant at 35 N. Paint St. opened Thursday afternoon. Mike Laird has been working for a couple months to completely renovate the former Diamond Head, including putting a bar and gathering area in the front part and installing an entirely new kitchen. He'll be open weekdays 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dining and the bar will stay open until 10:30. Dining is until 10:30 on Friday and Saturday and the bar will close at 11:30. It will be closed on Sundays. For more information and for your PDAs: 779-3415.
  • Tom Haynes celebrated opening his fourth Subway franchise Friday morning in the East Main Street Sunoco station operated by Jim Doersam. He also operates the Subways on Western Avenue and North Bridge Street and one in Circleville. He has some 2-for-1 specials running to celebrate the opening.
  • Joe Molnar and Chad Jordan teamed up to completely gut and re-roof what is now known as the Express Shine Car Wash at 87 N. Bridge Street. All new washing and waxing gear await vehicles.
  • Jeff Wood and Dick Brown are offering an eclectic mix of furniture, baskets, clocks and other handmade items in addition to bedding at their Mattress, etc. at 1280 N. Bridge St. next to CiCi's Pizza. Amish furniture and other items are available.

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS: Efforts to bring in new business and industry as well as helping existing ones expand is a cooperative effort on several levels. To learn more about those efforts and to participate in the process, you'll want to be at the chamber's Economic Development Luncheon Wednesday at the Chillicothe Country Club. Representatives from the state, city, CIC and chamber will discuss initiatives under way now to add more jobs to the local economy. It starts at 11:30 and costs $12. Make sure, though, to register: Economic Development luncheon registration

SAFETY FROM THE TOP: Four top-level manager/owners shared their commitment to the safety of their employees at the jam-packed luncheon last week of the Ross County Safety Council. This was the mandatory CEO event required by the Bureau of Workers' Compensation for council members to be eligible for a special 2 percent premium rebate discount in the fall. The council has grown this year from about 25 in the summer to more than 70 today. For information on joining, call the chamber at 702-2722 or visit the council's webpage: Ross County Safety Council

COMMITTEES MERGED: The chamber's Networking Committee will be adding members of the former Marketing and Membership Committee to get more members involved in the planning and execution of chamber events, such as the Annual Meeting and new May social and dance, as well as provide more manpower for the annual Membership Drive in the fall. As always, though, there is room for more committee members. If you'd like to become one, give the chamber a call at 702-2722.

NEWEST MEMBERS: Here's who's joined the chamber recently:

  • Express Shine Car Wash, 87 N. Bridge St., by Joe Molnar and Chad Jordan.
  • Express Personnel Services, 10 Health Drive, by Duane Sowers, employment agency, 773-9777
  • Christopher S. Cook Law Office, 14 S. Paint St., Suite 14, 772-6651.

SECURITY ENGINEERING OWNER BACK AT THE HELM: Rob Robson, a chamber board member, is back on the job after a brief retirement. He plans to continue and expand operations at the firm. Security Engineering, formerly located on West Second Street, has relocated to temporary offices in the Barrett Building and is looking for a new permanent location. Rob also just opened his second Curves fitness franchise for women, along with partner Steve Houseman, this time in Greenfield, which will be managed by Jan Nusbaum who also manages the Curves in Waverly.

MAP SALES COMING TO A CLOSE: Only a couple weeks remain before advertising sales close for the next chamber-sponsored map which hits the streets in May and will be used for two years to hand out to visitors to the city. One advantage of taking out an ad is that you will receive copies of your own to hand to customers. The number depends on the size of ad you buy. And quite frankly, it's the best city map around. To reserve your space, call Dawn Plavak of Performance Publishing Group at 779-2333. The chamber receives a portion of the ad sales which go toward operations and to keep dues low.

SPEAKING SEMINAR GROWING: More than 25 are expected to attend next Thursday's Workforce Academy designed to improve your public speaking skills. Author and speaker Ted Janusz will conduct the session at the Ross County Service Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Make sure to register in advance: Workforce Academy registration

LOOKING FOR SOME CAPITAL?: A Small Business Administration Loan Workshop to familiarize business owners in southern Ohio with various lending programs and how best to prepare an application is set for Wednesday, Feb. 2. Hosted by the SBA, the Small Business Development Center for Region 7 and the Ohio State University South Centers, the workshop is 10-11 a.m. at the Ross County Service Center on Western Avenue. More information is available by calling Christie Welch at 800-860-7232 or by email at welch.183@osu.edu.

BAB AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Southern Hills Academy proved a great host for Wednesday's Business After Business. Maryjo Flamm-Miller and her staff gave guests tours of the school and handed out books as door prizes. Next month's BAB at Herrnstein Chrysler is on Feb. 23, one week later than normal because of the Annual Meeting on Feb. 17. Classic Brands and Citizens National Bank are co-sponsors.

NEW ON THE REGISTER: According to the Ohio Historical Society, the McCafferty Run Farmstead barn and other buildings on Ohio 104 north across from the VA Medical Center have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Wisconsin-style barn itself was built in 1939.

ORGANIZATIONS MAY APPLY FOR FUNDS: Charitable organizations may now apply for funds generated from the annual Southeastern Ohio Combined Federal Campaign. The drive receives donations from area federal employees. To learn more, call Linda Kight at 773-1141, Ext. 7248.

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP: Full-time high school or college students from Ross County high schools are eligible to apply for a $1,500 scholarship to study in a foreign country. Details are available here: Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation
