NEWPAGE NEWS AT STANDSTILL: At the risk of a last-minute announcement on the status of the local mills of NewPage, no news on the status of ownership has been forthcoming, but, as always, rumors abound. Over the holidays, two Dayton publications had stories about the former Mead Paper properties. The Dayton Business Journal the day after Christmas reported talks continue with a potential buyer for the mills. Quoted was John Allen, the local union representative. NewPage spokesperson Amber Garwood, who worked in Chillicothe for a time, declined to comment. Matt Allen, the mayor’s chief of staff, was quoted as saying the income tax revenue from the employees at the mill represents 12-15 percent of the city’s general fund revenue. In a separate story in the Dayton Daily News, it was noted that the Scioto Land Company, a group of private investors, purchased 150,000 acres of Ohio forest land formerly owned by Mead. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is hoping to acquiring 16,000 of the acres known as the Raccoon Ecological Management Area in Vinton County near the Zaleski State Forest.

FAYETTE ON SHORT LIST FOR ENGINE PLANT: Three industrial sites, including one in Fayette County, are being pushed by the state to attract a proposed Toyota engine plant, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch this week. The information was included in a letter Gov. Taft wrote to a Toyota official. Other counties listed were Clinton and Preble. Ohio is offering free land and up to $30 million in grants over 15 years to help with infrastructure improvement and worker training. Also in the running are Mississippi, Michigan, Tennessee and other states. A decision might be made this year.

A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION: The chamber’s Annual Dinner Feb. 22 will be a time to celebrate the growth and progress in Chillicothe and Ross County the past year as well as a time to look ahead to all that will get done in 2006 and beyond. There will be the changing of the guard in chamber leadership, recognition of the Volunteer of the Year for the chamber, announcement of the next Entrepreneur of the Year and the words of wisdom and antics of our guest speaker, Steven Little. Reservations are being taken now and the early ones will get the best seats as tables will be assigned. MAJOR CORNER GETTING A NEW TENANT: Fastenal will be moving into the renovated quarters of the former Heil Furniture store at the southwest corner of Bridge and Main streets shortly. The nuts, bolts, screws and fastener company is now on North Park Drive off Ohio 159 north and before that was on East Second Street near the former railroad tracks. Rodney Winegardner owns the building.

LAST CALL: Today is the last day to nominate someone for the chamber’s Entrepreneur of the Year award. Several have been received and nominees from the previous two years remain in the running. Entrepreneur nomination form

CEOs REQUIRED AT NEXT SAFETY LUNCHEON: To remain eligible for the 4 percent premium discount on workers’ compensation, companies must have their CEOs or CFOs attend Thursday’s luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council. Four CEOs from area companies – large and small – will talk about how they create a culture of safety at their operations. Make sure to register: Safety luncheon reservations
